Change.org is searching for a Principal Product Designer to lead the area of our business focused on empowering, attracting, and retaining people who start petitions to make the change they want to see in the world. This designer will shape strategy in close partnership with Product Management and Engineering, work on both large projects and quick experiments which require high judgement, and inspire and collaborate with the other designers in the space.
We’re a social impact business (a public benefit company), and the largest tech platform focused on civic action in the world with 50 million monthly users, 50,000 campaigns launched on the site every month, hundreds of millions of signatures per year, 200 staff members, and a new revenue model that has grown by 500% in 2 years. We are profitable, growing fast, and executing on a plan to deepen and scale the social movements on our platform, from strengthening hate crime legislation in South Africa, to bringing down the price of insulin across the United States, to fighting corruption in Indonesia, Italy, and Brazil. We are seeing surging levels of activity right now as the world mobilizes to fight the Coronavirus and the cascading impacts of the Coronavirus on society's most vulnerable.
We are looking for a Principal Product Designer who is great at shaping strategy that revolves around user needs, thinking holistically about the user experience, and building simple and delightful features. This designer will have a passion for expanding our platform to mobilize hundreds of millions of people to take deeper civic action. Strong leadership skills are also important as a leader within the team and because this role will grow into management.
You will be based out of our San Francisco office. You will report directly to our UX Director. As a key member of our Product team, you will develop a deep understanding of why people start petitions and what holds them back.
- Help form strategy and roadmaps, working closely with PM & engineering directors based on user insights.
- Conduct user research studies to help the team understand who their users are, their needs, and their desires.
- Create high-quality design solutions that deliver user and business value.
- Inspire and mentor other designers on the team, and contribute to team culture.
The most important skills and capabilities for the role are:
DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS & PROCESS: You are an expert in creating complex, large-scale design solutions that are both simple and delightful for users. You are a high-performing UX generalist, excelling in all the stages of the design process. You understand how and when to explain your ideas with the appropriate level of fidelity, which user research methodology is appropriate for what needs to be learned, and how to create new UI components that are both visually appealing and intuitive for users.
STRATEGY: Experience positively shaping product strategy over an area of the business. You understand user and business needs and they balance the two effectively. You have experience working in a fast-moving environment and understand how to identify and test assumptions.
OWNERSHIP & RESULTS: You prioritize based on what's important and urgent, fully own what you say you will, then drive excellent results across multiple teams. You lead by example, having designed launched experiences that had a measurable positive impact on the business and user experience. You may cite site analytics or user research sessions to explain the project’s impact.
COLLABORATION: You are low-ego, and communicate proactively, effectively, and respectfully. You lead collaboration and communication across teams. You have experience working within technical restraints and know how to respectfully push back with data and best practices in order to collaboratively create the best experiences when you are not aligned with stakeholders.
ADAPTABILITY: You embrace change and are resilient in the face of shifting goals, structures, systems or culture. You build systems to manage and support major organizational changes for your team. You mentor and coach your team to embrace change and be resilient in the face of shifting goals, structures, systems or culture.
LEADERSHIP SKILLS: Experience inspiring and leading other designers, ideally with authority. You build cultural systems that reinforce a positive and engaged team culture. You have a track record of building talent through mentorships and mechanisms. You are an expert in how to give and receive feedback. Your insights are valued and sought after, and reflect big thinking of the entire system which an experience lives within, down to specific details like copy.
We are open to a variety of experience levels and understand that years of experience are not the only indicator of skills and capabilities. In general:
- 10-15 years as an end-to-end product designer
- 2 years as a design lead or manager

Change.org is a global company, and salaries are adjusted for cost of labor in each city. The salary for a Principal Product Designer in San Francisco is $190,000. In exceptional circumstances, we may offer below the listed salary for high potential candidates with less experience, or above it for candidates with significantly more experience.
