The Patent Agent will report to our Head of Intellectual Property and will be responsible for monitoring technical team activities, harvesting inventions, and drafting patent applications to protect our innovative inventions, technologies, and products. This is a critical role that will contribute to the long-term success and competitive advantage of our company. The job duties include:
- Conducting patent preparation and prosecution activities for protecting commercially relevant products including:
- Interacting with R&D across all levels to identify patentable inventions for filing patents.
- Communicating with R&D to draft patent applications and provide guidance on the content of the patent application.
- Maintaining internal dockets of applications and office actions.
- Interfacing with outside patent attorneys (e.g. foreign filings, patent preparation not handled in-house, responding to office actions, reviewing invoices).
- Participating and/or conducting brainstorming sessions.
- Assisting with freedom-to-operate studies.
- Training staff on basic IP fundamentals and growing the ideation infrastructure for the technical teams to enhance the flow of ideas into the patenting pipeline.
- Communicating risks, opportunities, and insights to technical teams and leadership.
- Ability to travel up to 5% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel at times.
Role Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a biotech-related discipline, such as cell or molecular biology, genomics, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.
- 4+ years of IP experience as a licensed patent agent at a law firm or corporate setting (preferably both) within the life sciences industry.
- Strong ability to collaborate and communicate across all departments of the organization.
- Proven track record of building a meaningful IP portfolio, resulting in valuable patents.
- USPTO Patent registration.
- Intellectual curiosity with a willingness to work in a multidisciplinary environment and a strong aptitude for learning new technology areas.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in molecular biology or other life sciences field.
- Experience working at a life sciences tools, medical devices or biotechnology company.
We provide competitive total compensation packages, including base pay, benefits, and equity. In California, the estimated base salary range for this position is $140,000 - $180,000/year. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
