What we do
CD Baby, the best team in the independent music world!
If you're excited by the idea of helping great independent artists make a living doing what they love without giving control of their careers over to companies that only care about the bottom line, then CD Baby is the place for you.
CD Baby Mission: We give artists and songwriters the tools to get their music everywhere.
About Our Products
The APT Development Team works on promotional tools for musical artists. Our primary product, HearNow, allows artists to very quickly setup a release page for any new release - be it a single, EP, or album. Artists can direct their fans to this release page as a central hub for information on that release, including listening to the release.
About the Job
This role primarily focuses on back-end software development. Typically, the languages and systems used are all in the LAMP stack, or a close cousin of that stack. Not only will this role need to write code for features and products, but there will be infrastructure and configurations as code (IaC, CaC) necessary as well. You’ll need to be comfortable in an increasingly automated development and deployments environment.
You’ll participate in a Scrum agile process. You’ll be honest with your teammates about what works and what does not, be it in the software written or the team’s processes in getting work done. You’ll hold yourself and your teammates accountable and will collaborate to get the job done as a team. You’ll also need to stay current on industry & technology trends and should continue to expand and refine your skills.
Occasionally, you’ll need to jump in and help sort out operational bugs and escalations from our customer support department to assist our artists.
While not required, experience with databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL would be beneficial. Experience with browser quirks is also a pretty solid plus, since we have browser-based, public-facing products. Experience in AWS, Azure, or other cloud services would be beneficial, as well as experience in containerization – particularly Docker and Kubernetes. Finally, if you have worked with continuous integration/deployments before, as well as automated testing frameworks, we’d love to chat with you.
We hope you’ll apply if you’re a musical artist, have worked in the music industry before, or are generally a fan of independent music. Connection to our mission of empowering independent artists & empathy for artists, while not required, certainly helps!
Our Technical Stack
As mentioned before, we operate primarily in the PHP-based LAMP stack. We’re in a hybrid setup right now, as we’re largely migrating from an on-premises VMWare cluster to AWS resources. Ubuntu and Amazon Linux 2 are our primary operating systems. Laravel & Lumen are our go-to PHP frameworks. In terms of infrastructure & configs as code, we’re using Ansible, Terraform, & a few other tools to those ends. We also use a little bit of NodeJS & Grunt, as well as a fair amount of Bash scripting.
We are expending effort to modernize our technical stack and infrastructure. This comes in different ways, such as ensuring we upgrade language, framework, and operating system versions on a regular basis. We’re working on using more continuous integration and deployment systems, and we’re also migrating into the public cloud (particularly AWS) more and more to extend and replace our VMware infrastructure. We’re also going to be adding more to our automated testing processes.
