Job summary

We’re looking for a Head of Engineering to join our London team and lead the six engineering teams working on Operations - our logistics, distribution and transportation platforms. This software controls how we transport cars across the UK and Europe, between our various preparation, customer care centres and storage sites, and how we fulfil the delivery of cars to our customers’ homes in flexible time slots.

What you will be doing

You’ll be joining Cazoo, one of the fastest-growing technology companies in the world, at an early stage, where there is an opportunity to have a significant impact, growing engineering teams, contributing to our culture and designing software in a greenfield environment.

Product Engineering teams at Cazoo are cross-functional. They are led by a Product Manager and an Engineering Manager and contain around four to six software and quality engineers plus Product Designers and Subject Matter Experts as required. At present, our teams comprise a blend of permanent employees and professional services engineers, and all the teams in Operations are based in our office in Euston.

The Head of Engineering is a second-level line management role, managing several Engineering Managers. This role reports to the Group Engineering Director, and you will join the engineering leadership team, working alongside four other Heads of Engineering across London, Munich and Lisbon.

Through your engineering managers, you will ensure our engineers are happy and engaged, delivering valuable and high-quality software to our customers. In addition, you will work closely with our Chief Architect to ensure the systems we design scale and perform and fit into the broader technical vision for Cazoo.

Your teams will receive support from our agile coaching team, providing facilitation for the agile development processes as needed, and a platform team that provide developer tooling and help with the automation of the production environment.

Cazoo Engineering embraces TDD, Clean Code and the values and practices of XP, DevOps and Software Craftsmanship, including pair programming and a “you build it, you run it” mindset.

  • You will lead the building of a world-class engineering culture by hiring and developing engineering talent in our teams.
  • You will be a role model for the values of our organisation and lead by example.
  • You will work with the engineering leadership to define and develop our vision and strategy for engineering and then enable your teams to achieve it. You will work with your teams to set OKRs that motivate and deliver results.
  • You will be accountable for both predictable delivery and high-quality output of your teams. You will measure the success of your team through the frequent delivery of high-quality code to our customers.
  • You will be expected to understand the technologies and services in your domain and to be able to challenge engineering decisions when they don’t seem right.
  • You will be responsible for the development of your team through coaching and mentoring, supported by compassionate but direct feedback.
  • You will champion the adoption and improvement of advanced modern, agile software development practices within your teams.
  • You’ll promote the building and improvement of a collaborative product engineering culture in line with our values.

Required skills and experience

  • You have a passion for people and developing great autonomous and empowered teams, not just great products.
  • You have real-world experience rapidly creating and scaling up effective engineering teams. You can show how you have also effectively hired team players and not just technical expertise.
  • You can show how you have created and furthered an engineering culture around solid engineering practices and principles, such as TDD and pair programming. You know what good looks like and that path to get there!
  • You have a track record of delivering quality and results at a pace across multiple engineering teams. You have operated successfully as a “leader of leaders” and have a proven ability to influence decision-making at all levels across the organisation.
  • You can demonstrate a depth of knowledge and experience in application development in a large scale (preferably cloud-based) setting with modern software development practices such as CI/CD and agile methods.
  • You can demonstrate commercial acumen and customer orientation. You have extensive experience collaborating closely with product and design colleagues as well as stakeholders on product development.
  • Finally, you have resilience and a calm approach in the face of the inevitable challenges of a startup environment and bring a sense of fun and joy to your day-to-day!
  • Prior knowledge of logistics and distribution platforms is of particular interest but is not a prerequisite for the role.

Benefits

  • This is an opportunity for you to be involved in creating a world-class Engineering team and a culture of engineering excellence, working on predominantly greenfield projects.
  • An opportunity to work on a genuinely modern application architecture; fully serverless and event-driven with React on the front end and Typescript used throughout.
  • You will be supported by a coaching team, which includes international conference speakers dedicated to helping you and your team achieve your goals. The coaches cover technical, quality and agile delivery aspects.
  • At Cazoo, you will play a key role in creating a highly visible and tangible product that’s seeking to change and replace a painful process that almost everyone must contend with at some point in their life.
  • Last but not least, we foster a company culture that values its staff – as demonstrated by our generous benefits package detailed above, as well as the chance to gain equity in a business with outstanding prospects.

We offer a competitive salary, with an outstanding benefits package, including an annual bonus and 25 days holiday (plus an extra day for your birthday). We also offer a 5% salary matched pension scheme, life insurance and critical illness cover. At Cazoo we are also passionate about well being; we provide an annual wellness fund and we partner with a leading healthcare provider.
