We foster an environment that allows people to share, engage, learn, support, participate and work towards positive change. We hold regular culture and inclusion events, such as Black History Month, Pride Week and International Women’s Day and have genuine goals to improve every day. You can read more about these events on our blog, and more about our team and our values here.

The Role:

Underwriters are at the heart of our business as they allow us to grow our portfolio whilst keeping bad debt within appetite. Our Underwriters are part of our Credit team that sits within the broader Risk function.

You will be making decisions on whether to lend to new customers but also on any changes to our backbook, for example a limit increase. Your remit will cover decisions for both unregulated and regulated customers including limited companies, sole traders and partnerships. It's vital that we maintain an element of manual underwriting to support our ambitious growth plans as we're continuously looking at new market segments and geographies to explore.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Reviewing lending applications along with supporting credit reference agency and financial data in order to make a credit decision
  • Performing credit reviews on our backbook customers to determine whether their credit decisions are still valid
  • Interacting with our internal Operation, Fraud, Compliance and Collections teams to review all enquiries and provide credit decisions where required
  • Facilitate Risk initiatives and pilots by reviewing credit data and making decisions within company appetite
  • Conduct periodic review of individual bad debts to assist in risk, fraud and collections performance reviews
  • Assist in internal reviews and external audits conducted on our behalf as required (including adherence to our underwriting, collections, AML, TCF, complaints, and vulnerable customer policies)
  • Support with ad hoc analytical tasks e.g. review of limit setting strategy, product usage or changes to lending criteria

What we are looking for:

  • 2+ years’ underwriting experience with a minimum of 12 months’ mandate (secured or unsecured)
  • A broad understanding of how businesses operate, financial statements and credit files
  • Ability to demonstrate best practises in Responsible Lending putting the customer first and protecting the business against bad debt through inaccurate lending decisions
  • Must be able to communicate clearly at all levels and capable of writing procedures, presentations and reports
  • Adaptable and be able to embrace change including resilience under pressure
  • A thirst to investigate, propose and embrace new methods and technology, following through from its inception to its conclusion
  • Able to think outside the box to generate ideas about how to make improvements through automation and pilot new strategies

Helpful haves:

  • Start-up experience a major plus
  • International underwriting experience
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Basic knowledge of SQL, PowerBI and data analysis tools (Python or R)

What you'll get in return

We try not to take ourselves too seriously (all the time) so we make sure our office is decked out with a pool table, arcade machine, beer tap, and a couple of office dogs thrown in for good measure. In addition to a great environment in a buzzing location in Shoreditch we also offer:

  • Competitive base salary
  • 28 days holiday (plus bank holidays)
  • Generous yearly anniversary rewards (including 4 weeks paid sabbatical in year 4)
  • We give every employee a learning budget of £1,000 a year to spend on your own personal development (we want to encourage your growth!)
  • Private healthcare through Vitality
  • Six free therapy sessions
  • Opportunities for internal career progression
  • Free breakfast and snacks every day
  • An opportunity to pilot new ideas that impact the growth and direction of the business
  • The chance to work for one of the fastest-growing FinTech companies in the UK
  • Travelcard loan and/or cycle to work scheme
