About the role:

Cana is looking for an Associate Scientist or Scientist level Sensory professional to help design and operate our sensory program for evaluating product formulations.  This is an exciting opportunity to design the testing for brand new beverages that we are developing in our own lab to be used in this groundbreaking technology.  You will have the unique opportunity to generate data from customer panels and provide recommendations to the team on what beverages would likely perform well amongst customers.  We are building a category defining experience and this will be a unique experience to contribute in the development of beverages in a way that will disrupt the market.  Are you thirsty for more?

Responsibilities:

  • Manage sensory testing to support product formulation at all stages of development (early R&D to final launch)
  • Prepare samples and run all aspects of sensory testing including informal panels, blinded panels, expert panels and/or panels with external collaborators
  • Develop and maintain a flavor lexicon for internal/external sensory benchmarking
  • Provide input from sensory testing to guide product formulation and optimization

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • 3+ years of experience managing sensory testing Experience with a wide variety of sensory testing methodologies used in product development and consumer feedback (equivalence testing, descriptive testing, consumer focus groups, etc)
  • Extensive familiarity with sensory sciences and understanding and interpretation of taste panel data including statistical analysis and report summarization for product development decision making.
  • Understanding of the science and chemistry of flavor and how to match that to perception
  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Sensory Sciences or related

Other Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience doing sensory testing on wine or alcoholic beverages
  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit with an ability to roll your sleeves up and make things happen
  • Experience working in a start-up or small company environment

Location

This position will be located in Emeryville with occasional travel to Redwood City


The pay range for this full-time position that we reasonably expect to pay is $90,000 - $140,000. Individual compensation and level is based on various factors including, experience, education, skill set, and geographic location. This range is for our Bay Area, California location and may be adjusted to the labor market in other geographic areas.  We offer equity in the company, a robust benefit package, and the opportunity to be part of ground breaking product development.
