Camp Phoenix is summer school, reimagined. We empower low-income youth to overcome the summer opportunity gap by blending the essence of sleep-away camp, with the rigors of discovery-based learning. Through joyful academics, enrichment, and community building, our unique, overnight summer immersion program propels middle-school students to reach their fullest potentials as leaders, achievers, and community change agents. Founded in 2012, Camp Phoenix brings low-income youth to its campsite in San Gregorio each summer, where mornings are spent in common core-aligned, exploratory math and literacy groups. Throughout the day campers engage in outdoor and social-emotional learning: sleeping under the stars, cooking breakfast as a team, picking berries from local farms, and peering into tide pools at the nearby beaches. Through the powerful combination of academics and overnight camp, we uniquely position our campers to make growth in academics, while also growing their identities as individuals and young leaders.

The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Leadership Program at Camp Phoenix is for alumni campers who want to return to camp to develop their leadership skills and give back to the camp community. 10 high-schoolers will be chosen to participate in activities centered on community service, professionalism, public speaking, goal-setting and personal growth. While mentoring younger children at camp, CITs will also gain job skills through “daily internships” with different teams in the following areas: Food service, Healthcare, Education, Recreation, and Business/Administration. Our aim is for CITs to gain confidence and real skills, but also have fun, be inspired by each other, feel rejuvenated to start school in the fall, and feel like they are a part of something bigger than themselves and worth working hard for.

While the CIT Program will be fun for alumni, high-schoolers who participate will be asked to put our middle school-aged campers at first priority. At the completion of the program, each CIT receives a $300 gift card of their choice, in recognition that many high-schoolers are taking time away from work to participate.

Returning CITs are encouraged to apply for this summer again, but are only eligible for Lead CIT positions. Lead CITs will be given additional responsibilities during camp and will be expected to step up their leadership as returners.

In addition to the qualifications that we look for among all Camp Phoenix staff members, CITs must be:

  • Must be an alumni of Camp Phoenix
  • Must be 15 years old or older, and a sophomore in high school or higher
  • Strong communicator with both campers, staff and peers
  • Willing to learn, try new things, develop professional skills, and get critical feedback
  • A strong team player with campers and staff
  • Passionate about giving back to the Camp Phoenix community through service
  • Full of positive energy and joy!

Selection process:

  • CIT positions are open until filled, meaning there is no deadline to submit your application, and we will review candidates as they apply until all spaces are filled. Resume and Cover Letter are not required.
  • CITs must submit an application, complete a phone interview, and provide a teacher's contact information for us to collect a recommendation. Once selected, CITs must sign an offer letter and have their parent or guardian complete the CIT registration forms. CITs will also be expected to participate in all trainings and other dates.
  • Good luck!

Program dates
