The Director of Strategic Communications is responsible for building outsized awareness, brand engagement, reputation, and a portfolio with key stakeholders (including consumers/general public, customers, investors, local communities, government officials, and regulators) through impactful coverage in media, holistic and engaging communications strategies (internal/external) as well as digital and social media amplification.

What You’ll Do

Corporate Brand & Media

  • Act as internal steward for culture and champion brand values/culture by amplifying and communicating around organization-wide initiatives that embed corporate identity and commitment to being a leading cannabis brand.
  • Develop and implement both internal and external communications strategies for the TPCO corporate brand with key stakeholders.
  • Identify story angles illustrating key themes, and then generate coverage in traditional and nontraditional media.
  • Highlight marketing and brand activations, community events, corporate initiatives etc.
  • Develop key messages and press materials for key business and corporate trade press outreach.
  • Prepare TPCO executives for interviews with business/key corporate trade media.
  • Maintain relationships with key industry media and influencer contacts to keep abreast of industry trends and competitive information.
  • Stay current on key industry and policy issues and shape the strategy for communicating on them.
  • Lead various media events, tours or trips for US-based media (post-COVID).
  • Develop strategy to implement, manage and broaden social media activity and impact for corporate brand
  • Closely partner and collaborate with functional leaders across marketing, HR and other departments on internal communications initiatives and campaigns

Brand Communications

  • Collaborate with the brand marketing teams to create earned media strategies that achieve volume profits goals and are aligned with local and international marketing direction.
  • Act as advisor to guide/provide professional expertise on projects that require strategic framing and creative strategies (programs, partnerships and execution) to ensure impactful execution and timely evaluation across public relations, events, and influencer initiatives.
  • Create communication plans and programs to amplify brand initiatives to all relevant stakeholders (media, distributors, employees, etc.).

Digital Media

  • Lead the creation and execution of social media plans to build awareness and positive reputation of TPCO among key stakeholders.
  • Lead content development and implementation of/monitor conversations on corporate external social media channels.
  • Leverage innovative storytelling and emerging platforms to identify and engage with known and new audiences.
  • Maintain the TPCO corporate website as a focused and dynamic resource for all internal and external communication needs including SEV, Hiring initiatives, etc.

Customer Communications

  • Execute relevant programs supporting our business priorities through our customer communications suite of tools (podcasts, webinars, newsletters, etc.).

Investor Relations

  • Assist in coordinating and/or preparing earnings releases and other financial announcements, conference call remarks, investor presentations, and management reports of market, trading, and stock ownership nature.
  • Assist in development and execution of campaigns to target appropriate retail investors.
  • Advise senior management on expected investment community reaction to various strategic decisions and current market perceptions of the company.
  • Communicate with executive management and the board of directors as it relates to communications strategy and ongoing initiatives, events etc.

 Other Areas of Responsibility

  • Measure on an ongoing basis the effectiveness of programs to adapt strategy and execution where relevant.
  • Drive the planning and execution of external communications activities (e.g.: Social Equity, Sustainability and Responsibility initiatives, presentations at industry events, analyst meetings) for TPCO management, as needed.
  • Manage external crisis communications and work closely with the Legal department to ensure crisis preparedness.
  • Act as liaison on new corporate services and experience opportunities.
  • Manage relationships with PR/communications-related agencies
  • Hire and train employees by applying high standards for selection and continued performance.
  • Establishes clear and stretching goals, communicates and delegates key responsibilities, and actively utilizes all performance, development, and career tools to their full potential.
  • Drives positive employee relations and delivers sustainable results through being a positive role model.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.

What You Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism or a related field preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 6+ year’s experience in corporate communications, public relations, advertising or related field
  • Crisis management experience
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Strong news judgment
  • Strong literacy skills - strong writing and presentation skills with a good sense of how to use rhetoric and communication
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office, comfortability with various software and databases.
  • Strong media contacts preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and time manage.
  • Must be able to adapt to a changing work environment.
  • Experience working in fast-paced work environment and able to adapt to demands of competing work priorities.
  • Proven leadership and people management experience.
  • Cannabis experience is a plus but not required.
  • Entry-level knowledge of cannabis related vocabulary and products preferred but not required.

Working Environment

  • This job may operate in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, filing cabinets and may work in proximity with customers and staff.
  • Must be able to occasionally travel to other office/company locations.

Job Requirements

  • Work revolves around objectives, projects and priorities, not hours; must be able to work weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime as needed.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must comply with all legal or company regulations for working in the industry.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete a post offer, pre-employment background check with the local law enforcement or San Jose Police Department.
