The Opportunity 

Cala Health is seeking a Staff Firmware Engineer to join our growing product development team. This team member will focus on the stack from hardware support to the application itself, leading the development of new firmware technology on low power, wearable embedded systems. The Staff Firmware Engineer is a hybrid role and candidates must live in the San Francisco / Bay Area.  

The salary range of $138,000 - $183,000. Additionally, we offer a robust benefits package. This offering is aligned with our overall compensation philosophy. 

 A Day in the Life 

  • Assist in component selection process, particularly as it pertains to low power applications
  • Develop support for hardware / peripherals including motion sensors, flash memory, analog hardware, wireless communication
  • Develop application and system drivers
  • Develop system technologies, such as data management and transport
  • Implement efficient data-processing algorithms
  • Implement user interfaces
  • Optimize code for low power applications
  • Develop software accessories for interacting the embedded systems, such as manufacturing tools or patient/physician facing applications
  • Participate in code reviews as well as develop documentation accordingly to internal processes
  • Develop documentation that defines and drives system-critical software items
  • Offer technical guidance as necessary
  • Assume technical ownership of system-critical software items

 Qualifications, Skills and Experience 

  • BS or MS Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering required
  • 6+ years’ experience working in firmware applications for wearables and ultra low power / ultra small footprint design
  • Experience with microcontrollers, including ARM Cortex M0, M3, M4
  • Experience with relevant technologies such as WiFi, BLE, 4G/5G, IMU or other biosensors
  • Familiarity with integrated hardware design and debugging
  • Great communication skills and comfortable interfacing across multiple teams
  • Excellent C programming skills and proficiency in Python; comfort across multiple programming languages and platforms is a plus
  • Experience in Medical Device is a plus, including familiarity with medical device standards such as IEC 62304
  • Experience developing within various RTOS such as Zephyr, Linux, freeRTOS is desired
