The Role

BuzzFeed Inc. is looking for a freelance writer with experience covering timely pop culture news to work with our weekend team. In this role, you will receive assignments from our weekend editors and turn around pop culture news stories within two hours. If you follow everyone, from Lil Nas X to Lana Condor, and you have the willingness to cover them obsessively, we’d love to hear from you. 

This freelance position has an hourly rate of $20-$30 and candidates should be able to start immediately. Remote candidates are eligible. Residents of California, Colorado, Connecticut, DC, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington are encouraged to apply. 

You Will

  • Write assignments from BuzzFeed’s weekend editors and execute them quickly
  • Generate and execute ideas for content based on news of the day
  • Work weekends, 9-5 PM ET

You Have

  • Ability to cover various topics including music, TV, film, fashion, beauty, sports, etc.
  • The ability to find unique angles for major news stories, including parsing social reactions to add context to BuzzFeed’s pop culture content
  • Some experience writing about sensitive topics, as well as content for BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other diverse communities

Preferred skills:

  • Experience writing Celebrity and other trending news stories
  • Experience vetting and sourcing photos
  • Experience with SEO
