The Role

BuzzFeed News’s ambitious breaking news division is looking for a smart and fast-paced reporter to join our team. 

This person will report on a general assignment desk built for the internet era. Depending on the day, that could involve reporting out breaking news catastrophes, diving into the origin of the latest meme taking over our culture, and pitching sharp angles or scoops that cut through the noise on topics that the BuzzFeed News audience trusts us to cover. 

This person will work with our staff of breaking news reporters and editors in New York City, Los Angeles, Washington DC, London, and Texas, often collaborating as a team to serve a 24/7 audience. Our team seeks to be the best equipped to chase the biggest news of the moment, be it internet culture, crime, politics, tech, entertainment, and whatever else the world could throw at us.

You Will

You Have

  • Have at least three years reporting or editing experience on a fast-paced news desk with a relentless desire for distinctive coverage.
  •  Understand how information — and disinformation — travels online and pitch the best stories of the day before they hit the mainstream.
  • Be savvy about news happening on and off the internet, and be skeptical enough to not
    immediately fall into accepted narratives.
  • Be able to handle high-pressure, quick-deadline situations on some of the most competitive
    stories in the world.
  • Be able to appreciate and see the value in lighter, social news, while reporting it with the same degree of seriousness and skill that you'll bring to an in-depth, hard news feature.
  • Be ready to hit the phones, know how to scour social media sources, and produce original reporting and angles.
  • Understand where to find public records and how to fight for them.
