Purpose
 
Server Hardware is one of the largest areas of spend at Box, with tens of thousands of servers across multiple data centers and hundreds of applications. We have only recently formed a Hardware Engineering function to design and qualify the most efficient hardware to power the growth of the business, and this is a great opportunity to build a Hardware Engineering function from scratch at a hyper growth company. We have already achieved massive impact which has fundamentally changed the business trajectory of the company, and we are looking for your help to do more!
 
Why the team needs you
 
As the second engineer on the Hardware team, we need someone a driven, smart "Builder" familiar with industry leading best practices in Hardware Engineering to help create and scale this function from the ground up. We need your help to build scalable processes and automation to evaluate the latest technology, build automation for testing and performance analysis, and work with our vendors and across the Engineering organization to continue to improve cost efficiency, performance, and reliability of server hardware at Box.

Who you are
 
Requirements:
  • Solid understanding of X86 server architecture and components
  • 2+ years experience building performance testing automation and frameworks in any programming language
  • 2+ years of working experience with selecting, qualifying, and productionalizing new Server Hardware and components
  • 2+ years of working experience debugging and fixing hardware issues
 
Nice to have:
  • Experience collaborating with developers and Service Owners in a distributed systems/microservices architecture
  • Experience qualifying Firmware and BIOS updates
  • Identifying and implementing Firmware, BIOS, and OS level optimizations
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Build and continuously improve automation for server performance testing and analysis
  • Identify the latest new technologies, and perform testing and analysis to determine suitability for use at Box
  • Select, qualify and productionalize new technologies and vendors to continuously improve server hardware efficiency, performance, and reliability
  • Work with vendors to debug and troubleshoot systemic hardware issues (not day to day break/fix)
  • Build processes and frameworks to collaborate cross-functionally to perform all of the above
