Block Renovation, Fintech Engineering Lead

ABOUT US

Block is a renovation platform transforming the $450 billion renovation industry. Block democratizes access to high-end design, while combining design, construction, and materials into a streamlined experience. Block simplifies a complex and convoluted process and gives homeowners certainty on outcomes, quality, price, and time.

Our mission is to give homeowners a better way to improve the spaces they live in, and to give contractors a better way to work. We are building an ambitious, tenacious, and creative team who is unafraid of tackling new challenges. The founders are former leaders at Casper, HuffPost, and Rent the Runway. Investors include Softbank, New Enterprise Associates, Lerer Hippeau, Giant Ventures, Obvious Ventures, MorningSide Ventures and more.

Employees come to Block for the opportunity to work in a rapidly scaling tech start-up that remains steadfastly dedicated to its employees, its culture, and constant iteration and improvement.

ROLE

Block Fintech is an ambitious, entrepreneurial team building a new product from 0 to 1 to take the financial stress & constraints out of renovations. We’re currently building this team from the ground up and will be launching our product as a new venture for the company later this year.

Payments and financing are the lifeblood of the construction industry. Contractors constantly struggle with how and when they get paid. Sometimes even if they get paid. Homeowners have to write paper checks -- sometimes they are tied to loosely defined milestones, sometimes they’re not. Both parties occasionally find themselves in disputes based on change orders and scope adjustments throughout the course of the project. There is no equivalent of PayPal, Stripe, or Square in general contracting that have made payments fast, automated, and ubiquitous or financial management easy.

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Lead to join as this new venture’s founding engineer and tech lead. As a founding member of the Fintech Team, you will report directly to the GM of Fintech and partner closely with our product and design leads to build our Fintech solution 0 to 1.

This role will require strong entrepreneurialism, agility, tenacity, and patience. You are building a product from ground-up -- with the benefit of working in a Series C funded company with deep knowledge and experience in how homeowners and contractors interact.

You will work in a high-velocity environment to develop our new product, bring it to market and iterate towards product market fit. This will require forward-thinking, solutions for complex processes, and a balance of speed vs. future proofing. This is a player-coach role, where you’ll be expected to develop our greenfield products as well as lead a growing team of engineers on the team.

As our technical lead, you will help drive key decisions about the technologies, tools, and best practices we adopt into our engineering culture. You’ll deliver the best experience possible for our customers while ensuring high standards of code quality and system reliability. Your work will make a tangible impact on the lives of construction professionals along with people and their homes.

 RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with the GM of Fintech, product, and design colleagues to develop our strategic plan and technical approach to building our 0 to 1 product.
  • Develop greenfield MVP products, setting up our early architecture, technical capabilities, and initial applications.
  • Lead and mentor a high performance and diverse team of engineers and technologists as we expand our team.
  • Help set and uphold high standards for code quality, test coverage, and platform stability without sacrificing delivery and iteration speed.
  • Iterate on internal processes to help the team achieve more with less, and maintain a high delivery velocity.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 7+ years hands on experience as a full stack senior engineer and tech lead
  • Experience developing fintech applications and utilizing various payments and banking APIs.
  • Experience developing early stage applications, taking them to scale, and maintaining them over many release cycles.
  • Expert knowledge of modern ES6 Javascript/Typescript programming, testing, troubleshooting and automation techniques; experience with Node.js and React preferred.
  • A desire to help build an inclusive, diverse, and high performing team. Even better if you’ve done that before.
  • Experience working with and leading development with an engineering team distributed over multiple time-zones preferred.
  • Highly ambitious and goal-oriented.
  • Able to build for the long term, but also able to find efficient short-term solutions.

BENEFITS

  • Earn equity in an early stage high-growth company
  • 100% subsidized health insurance, dental coverage, vision coverage
  • 12 weeks universal fully paid family leave
  • PTO and company holidays
  • 3 weeks a year where you can work anywhere
  • 401k retirement savings plan with matching employer contribution
  • Employee discount on renovation services
  • Budgeted learning and development stipends

COMPANY VALUES

  • Force simplicity
  • Problems are our fuel
  • Collaborate with tenacity and humility
  • Save money where we should
  • Speed is our advantage
