We are looking for a responsible and detail-oriented candidate to work under the direction of the Controller. Your duties would include but not limited to, support and oversee accounts payable and receivable, operational accounting and the monthly close, prepare and/or review technical accounting policies for BlackSky, and assist with all types of financial internal and external audits for a public company. You must be able to work independently and often with compressed deadlines. The role is located in Herndon, Virginia with on-site presence of at least two times per week and the remainder is remote.
Responsibilities:
- Support the accounting department with all aspects of the general ledger. This includes review of journal entries, accounts payable and receivable. Enhancements to the existing manual process and addition of automation are encouraged.
- Support the Controller on all corporate transactions and the ongoing responsibilities, as well as the internal control environment. Alternate reviewer to payroll processing.
- Manage and support a multi-functional accounting department on a day-to-day basis. Strive to improve employee morale in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
- Assist in the review of quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements, including support for the presentation of financial statement schedules (cash flows, equity roll-forward, footnotes, among others), reviewing GAAP checklists, and enhancing disclosure standards to meet stringent public company controls and requirements.
- Responsible for maintaining the exiting corporate internal control over financial statements environment with collaboration with other functions such as People Ops and Information Technology on dependent controls. Responsible for additions, edits, or deletions to the risk control matrix.
- Responsible overall for the technical accounting analysis areas including all debt and equity transactions, complex satellite production and launching relationships by identifying and addressing accounting issues through preparation of technical accounting memos.This includes a significant focus on assisting the Controller with documenting and implementing the revenue recognition for all new contracts under the five-step process in ASC 606. You may need to identity and initiate processes and calculations to meet compliance standards.
- Manages the assessment of accounting implications of new accounting pronouncements and establishes a process for frequent and appropriate communication to the Corporate Controller and other stakeholders.
- Responsible for maintaining and updating BlackSky’s accounting policies.
- Manage the financial audit and identify and remediate any process deficiencies or oversights in advance.
- This position will have direct reports but is also expected to coordinate and help as a senior member of the team.

Required Qualifications:
- At least 10-15 years’ combined work experience including experience working in a public audit firm.
- At least 3-5 years’ experience demonstrating strong leadership skills, high energy, initiative, creativity, and grit - with a proven ability to independently manage significant initiatives across organizations and across geographies, as well as develop and motivate staff.
- Must be able to work towards strict monthly, quarterly, and annual deadlines, manage multiple responsibilities across the totality of the accounting department and ensure full completeness and accuracy of all deliverables.
- Advanced knowledge of US GAAP and SEC rules and regulations.
- Proven process for performing robust and complex technical research and analysis from the problem definition stage through facilitating the integration of any new processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Professional certification as a CPA.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of DCAA w/ICE.
- Knowledge of Deltek Costpoint.
- Manufacturing and cost accounting work experience.
