About You

You want to apply your knowledge of plant science, experience as a researcher, and love of food to bring extraordinary produce to communities around the world. You have a passion for plants and a love for experimentation. You have experience with hydroponic horticultural crops in a production environment but are excited by the chance to experiment with new plants and techniques.

About the Role

As Director of Research at Beanstalk, you will be responsible for leading a team that will help develop new products and optimize production farms. You will be in charge of operating our R&D farm, where you will experiment with a wide variety of plants, environments, nutrient solutions, and growing techniques.

Your top priorities will be to understand and create resilient plants that are nutritious and fast-growing in our farms. You will carry out experiments at a scale and speed that has not been available until now. Our automated and modular growing technology allows us to easily run hundreds of experiments simultaneously, without any growing related maintenance. In doing so, you will:

  • Work with company leadership to set research priorities and roadmaps
  • Design and oversee the execution of experiments to test new plants, environments, nutrient solutions, and growing systems
  • Monitor and tune production hydroponic systems to increase yield, consistency, and quality
  • Work with our in-house engineer teams to create tools and machinery for R&D
  • Manage and maintain analytical equipment and tools used for research
  • Keep a stocked, clean, and orderly research environment to promote safety and productivity
  • Remain up-to-date on developments and research in controlled agriculture
  • Serve as a subject matter expert by presenting research findings internally and externally at industry conferences

  • M.S. or Ph.D. (preferred) in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Sciences, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience in controlled environment agriculture, horticulture, or plant science research (post-doctoral research counts as work experience)
  • Experience growing plants hydroponically
  • Experience optimizing plant nutrition for a diversity of crop species
  • Experience managing and overseeing multiple on-going initiatives simultaneously
  • Experience with the characterization of plants, including imaging, phenotyping, chemical analysis, and/or objective measurements of taste and texture
  • Ability to analyze data, synthesize results from multiple sources, and make concise recommendations
