About your role 

As Head of Risk, your key role is to ensure the integrity and stability of our microloan portfolio. Your role encompasses the crucial task of managing and mitigating risks associated with our loan offerings. You will lead a dedicated team, guiding them in the development and execution of a comprehensive risk monitoring framework. This framework is vital for assessing the effectiveness of our risk models and maintaining the integrity of our data systems and infrastructure. In this capacity, you will oversee the creation, evaluation, and application of various monitoring processes, including the development of alternate solutions and contingency plans to address potential risk factors.

A key aspect of your responsibility involves establishing standard procedures that adhere to industry best practices, ensuring our loan origination policies are robust and secure. You will leverage objective data to recommend modifications to our loan policies, aiming to enhance the overall health and sustainability of our loan portfolio.

Collaboration with other departments, such as customer success, marketing, and legal, is essential to ensure our credit risk policies are not only compliant with regulatory standards but also align with our overarching business strategy. Your leadership in this role is instrumental in driving our mission to become the most inclusive bank in the LATAM region, with a focus on maintaining a secure and reliable microloan portfolio.

Outcomes

  • Enhance and continually refine our credit risk models for maximum profitability and sustainability. Regularly evaluate and adjust these models to effectively balance risk and returns.
  • Partner with product and data teams to boost data quality. Implement best practices and identify improvements to ensure data processing pipeline integrity and accuracy.
  • Monitor and forecast credit risk model performance to support efficient risk management and inform crucial short-term business decisions.
  • Ensure our credit risk policies are not only regulatory compliant but also aligned with our business strategy, sharing insights with leadership for a unified risk management approach.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate internal sources of financial loss, establishing stringent controls and monitoring for early detection and resolution.
  • Guide the fraud prevention team to adhere to SOFIPO regulations, maintaining high standards for compliance and operational trust.
  • Focus on keeping the Loss Rate low each month for the microloan portfolio, managing credit risks effectively and continuously improving loan performance.

Day to day

  • Monitoring and improving the quality of data processing pipelines, identifying process improvements, and implementing best practices to minimize data integrity issues that could impact the accuracy of credit risk models.
  • Developing and maintaining a framework for credit risk monitoring, including early warning indicators, risk appetite limits, and stress testing scenarios.
  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining an extensive monitoring framework to track the performance of data infrastructure components in real-time, giving us the ability to react quickly with contingency plans when risks materialize.
  • Ensuring that credit risk policies and procedures are up-to-date, correctly implemented, and well documented in internal and external documentation, and conducting periodic reviews and testing to assess their effectiveness.
  • Conducting regular risk assessments to identify external and internal factors that could impact the profitability of our loan portfolio, and developing strategies to mitigate those risks.
  • Staying up-to-date with industry trends and best practices in credit risk management, and continuously seeking to improve the credit risk infrastructure.
  • Providing guidance and mentorship to the credit risk engineering team, fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making and high ownership, and working to build a talented and cohesive team.
  • Working with the rest of the leadership team to communicate the performance of the loan portfolio, highlighting potential risks, and opportunities for growth.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of experience managing the credit risk area, including developing and implementing credit risk management strategies.
  • Intermediate level of SQL and willingness to keep developing said skill.
  • In-depth knowledge of credit risk management principles, including credit scoring, portfolio management, and stress testing.
  • Ability to build and lead a high-performing credit risk team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, in both English and Spanish, with the ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical team members.

Nice to have

  • Experience working in a start-up or fast-paced and high-pressure environment.
  • Knowledge in back-end architecture design.
  • Familiarity with the microfinance industry, including experience with microloan products and underwriting methodologies.
  • Experience with machine learning and other advanced data analytics techniques, and the ability to leverage these tools to enhance credit risk management.
  • Advanced degree or certification in a relevant field such as Risk Management, Financial Engineering, or Data Science.

  • Critical / analytical thinking. You can correctly analyse the root causes of a problem, without getting side-tracked by irrelevant, minor details. You can come to the right conclusion and propose a clear, logical plan of action. You don't stay on the surface of things.
