Basis Technology has an opening in our digital forensics group in Cambridge, MA to lead a project that builds open source software to support digital investigations.  This is a unique opportunity to get a leadership position building software based on open source applications (Autopsy and The Sleuth Kit) that are used by thousands of digital investigators worldwide.

In this position, you will be the technical lead, which requires you to design and build multi-threaded backend code, user interfaces, and frameworks.   You will also be responsible for basic project management to ensure we are on schedule and create periodic status reports.

Our ideal candidate is one who has a strong architecture background, has built complex systems in the past, and still loves coding. If you’re looking to get involved with an open source project, dive into engineering problems, and make a difference, then we want to talk to you.

This is a full-time position.


  • Leader of agile development team and responsible for creating and defining tasks.
  • Primary developer for a multi-year contract.
  • Mentor more junior engineers.
  • Develop new features and fix bugs in the back-end or interface of the software.
  • Participate in public forums and lists regarding the open source projects.


  • Masters or Bachelors in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 6-10 years of professional programming experience
  • 6+ years of Java experience
  • 3+ years of Java Swing or FX experience
  • 3+ years of scripting experience
  • Strong Object-oriented design skills
  • Experience managing team or solo projects
  • Good time management and ability to estimate size of projects.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Interest in digital forensics, cyber security, and distributed systems
  • UI experience a plus

About Digital Forensics

Digital forensics involves the analysis of digital devices to answer investigative questions.  Building digital forensics software requires you to understand the details of how computers work and how data is stored so that you can find the evidence and display it to the user.  Your projects can include reverse engineering data, writing parsers, working with examiners, and coming up with data reduction techniques.
