ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL MEDICAL WRITER

Team – Medical Practice
Location – UK (London Hybrid)

The role

We are looking to appoint an Associate Principal Medical Writer (APMW) to work with senior colleagues to oversee and guide junior team members, and to develop, execute, and be accountable for healthcare communications programs that exceed client expectations. The APMW should demonstrate excellent writing skills embody the principles and best practices of healthcare communications, including industry guidelines and regulatory requirements, and actively champion these among junior colleagues.  They should be aware of current events, trends and issues in the scientific/healthcare space, and how they may impact the industry, AXON and our clients, and regularly share their insights with colleagues. The APMW should demonstrate a strong ability to independently make decisions and propose solutions, advising team members and seeking consultation and input from the senior team, the client and other resources on more complex issues. 

The APMW should be able to manage a wide range of competing priorities for clients, whilst visibly contributing to and driving internal AXON projects.

The APMW should develop client and opinion leader relationships, providing effective strategic counsel to clients, and enabling them to be seen as trusted advisors. They also should be proactively looking for ways to leverage these relationships to establish a positive profile for AXON, which includes proactively identifying and pursuing new business opportunities through their network. The successful candidate would be based in our London office.

Your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • The creation of a wide range of documents
  • Review of junior team member's work for style, strategy, content accuracy and data checking
  • Line management of junior writers
  • Successfully managing client relationships
  • Providing effective counsel to clients
  • Identifying and capitalizing on business opportunities
  • Leading formal client meetings
  • Mentoring, coaching and monitoring the long-term career development of staff

In addition to your responsibilities of creating documents, reviewing projects and managing client relationships at AXON we actively encourage the team to be involved in activities outside of their day-to-day work. Whether that’s being involved in our social, marketing or corporate social responsibilities (CSR) Electives, or running training sessions on topics they have a personal interest in (some recent examples include mindfulness and nutrition). We have a keen focus on training and development and as a rough guide, suggest employees aim to complete 37.5 hours of learning a year.  Whether that be through online learning, classroom training, or attending external events, that’s one week a year dedicated to your development.

Experience

  • Ideally, at least five to six years’ experience in medical communications or a relevant field
  • College or university degree or equivalent in a scientific discipline
  • Proven to demonstrate key competencies at this level in line with the competency model, having worked with line manager to address gaps and provide relevant opportunities

Skills/Competencies

  • Advanced* writing skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and quality control, instilling high editorial standards in others
  • Advanced* presentation and intermediate-to-advanced facilitation skills
  • Detailed knowledge on specific therapy areas and be the ‘go-to’ person for area of expertise, depending on practice group requirements
  • Knowledge and familiarity with issues in pharmaceutical industry and medical communications
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Ability to identify and capitalise on new business opportunities alongside team members
