Axle is seeking a Junior Network Engineer to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) located in Rockville, MD.

The primary responsibility of the Junior Network Engineer is to work with the infrastructure team and under the direct supervision of the Lead Network Engineer, ensure optimal performance and stability of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences’ (NCATS) network. This network supports the NCATS scientific computational lab and cloud computing environments. The selected candidate will provide technical support in all aspects of network management. As a member of the infrastructure team, the position works closely with the Lead Network Engineer, Windows, Linux and security teams, and the NCATS DBA group.
II – KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, FORMAL EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• Assisting in the design and deployment of LAN networks, including routers, switches, firewalls, and other networking devices.
• Monitoring network performance and troubleshooting connectivity issues, identifying root causes, and implementing solutions to minimize downtime.
• Configuring and maintaining network hardware and software components, ensuring compatibility, reliability, and security.
• Collaborating with cross-functional teams to implement network security policies and procedures, including access control, encryption, and intrusion detection/prevention.
• Keeping abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends and recommending enhancements to improve network efficiency and scalability.
• Experience working on both Linux and Windows-based systems.
• Resolute and uncompromising in delivering exceptional customer service.
• Ability to build strong interpersonal relationships.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on preparing clear and concise communications and giving oral presentations.
• Excellent organizational skills with an attention to detail.
• Ability to assimilate new knowledge and apply it quickly in a fast-paced, dynamically changing environment.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks.
• Critical thinking and reasoning ability is an essential part of this position.
Formal Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or at least 2 years of equivalent work experience.
• Industry certifications, such as CCNA, Network +, etc., are highly preferred.
• Experience with network management at NIH – preferred.
III – PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Configure and manage network components such as Cisco switches, F5, and Palo Alto.
• Under the direction of the Lead Network Engineer, participate in the selection of networking technologies and products for implementation.
• Configure and manage network components such as Cisco switches, F5, and Palo Alto (repeated duty, consider removing or combining).
• Apply security and firmware updates under the direction of the Lead Network Engineer
• Report to the NCATS IT Infrastructure Team Lead and/or the NCATS IT Manager on the status of network outages or issues, as well as project tasks, risks, and issues.
• Monitor NCATS network devices for anomalies or performance degradation.
