About the Role: Commands

We are seeking a Software Engineering Manager to lead a development team working on Commands for the Transportation Mobility Cloud. Our Engineering Managers are both technical leaders and people leaders.

How do you maintain millions of reliable, simultaneous connections with connected vehicles around the world? What kind of architecture can support real-time processing of trillions of messages to and from IoT devices each month, with near-zero downtime? With innumerable combinations of data formats, vehicle configurations, and device firmware versions, how can we design services with the flexibility to translate between the native language of the cloud and specific dialect of each individual vehicle? All the while, how do you monitor your distributed system at global scale to fix problems before a user even notices?

These are the kinds of challenges our teams are working on.

Job Description:

  • Lead an agile engineering team to build great software.
  • Build great software in a dynamic startup environment, including writing some code yourself.
  • Collaborate with Product Management on the team roadmap.
  • Organize and monitor the estimation, milestones, and delivery of work from the team.
  • Understand the key organizational business objectives and ensure that the team is aligned and productively working on achievement of those objectives.
  • Partner closely with other engineering teams to understand and resolve cross team dependencies and develop joint solutions.
  • Ensure that the team is following our engineering practices including design, architecture, development, documentation, testing, scalability, and security.
  • Define and track metrics to ensure the quality of the product.
  • Work closely with leadership on staffing and hiring to ensure that the team has the resources and skills to be successful.
  • Provide architectural vision for the team.
  • Mentor team members to ensure continued growth and development of the team.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science (or equivalent experience)
  • 4+ years of engineering management experience in an agile environment, with both technical and people management responsibilities
  • 5+ years of software development experience, writing and maintaining software systems
  • Strong written and verbal skills
  • Comprehensive understanding of software engineering and distributed systems architecture
  • 3+ years of experience building and designing high performance distributed systems solving large scale engineering challenges
  • Have a solid working knowledge distributed messaging and streaming platforms, such as Apache Kafka Streams
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment using agile software practices
  • Extremely focused with great attention to detail and accuracy
  • Exhibit flexibility, prioritization and the ability to multitask
  • Self-directed, take initiative and excellent project management skills
  • Professional, friendly and approachable at all times
  • Sound understanding of object-oriented, functional, and reactive programming principles
  • Ability to work on-site in our office in Palo Alto, Toronto, or Detroit
  • Flexibility for occasional international travel
