Role Overview

Attivo is in search of a dynamic Director of Tax to spearhead the establishment and growth of our new income tax division, enhancing Attivo's suite of accounting and financial services. This role presents an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to capitalize on Attivo's impressive trajectory since its inception 6 years ago, and play a pivotal role in shaping the firm's future.

The Director of Tax will be responsible for overseeing multiple client engagements, delivering specialized tax advisory and compliance services tailored to the unique needs of early-stage, venture-backed companies. Collaborating closely with firm leadership, the position will not only serve our clients but also play a vital role in expanding our business, directly influencing the firm's overall success. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record working with early-stage startups, thrive in a dynamic and evolving environment, and consistently deliver exceptional service to clients.

The position location is flexible/work from home, with preference given to candidates in the following cities where Attivo has an employee presence: San Francisco/Bay Area, San Diego/Southern California, New York City, Austin, and Nashville. Candidates in other locations are welcome to apply. Some travel to in-person company events is required, approximately 2-3 weeks out of the year. 

Responsibilities

  • Determine appropriate tax objectives, scope and methodology and actively participate in decision making with client's management to understand the broader impact of current decisions and possible solutions
  • Prepare and review of tax projections, tax work papers and tax returns, specifically, Federal and State tax returns
  • Oversee and manage the tax return process including identification and resolution of tax issues
  • Develop and establish policies, procedures, and set up technical infrastructure for preparing and processing tax returns
  • Manage multiple tax engagements in a team environment and independently
  • Identify potential opportunities for new and/or expanded client services
  • Lead and manage engagements, including budgeting, billing and engagement economics
  • Maintain communication with clients to ensure satisfaction, meet deadlines, remain current on legislative changes, and lead change effectively
  • As the practice grows, mentor, train and manage staff accountants to meet deadlines and prioritize workload
  • Engage in business development activities, preparing proposals, presenting in webinars, collaborating with other colleagues to present a comprehensive tax strategy to prospective and current clients

Requirements

  • Solid understanding of GAAP, CPA preferred
  • Advanced Excel
  • Experience with standard software solutions: QuickBooks Online, Xero, Netsuite, Bill.com, Gusto, Expensify, Carta
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Independent judgment and decision-making
  • Ability to manage multiple projects/priorities at a time
  • Professional curiosity & creativity
  • Passionate desire to learn & for continuous improvement
  • Proven market facing skills required to develop new business and sustain existing excellent client relationships
  • Must have visibility and recognition within your industry specialization and in your local market

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent field is required
  • Public accounting experience
  • CPA or Bar License required
  • 8+ years work experience in corporate tax compliance
  • Minimum of 4 years supervising and training experience
  • Master's degree in tax or equivalent field preferred
  • Experience working in a fast-paced technology, or professional services environment
  • Experience with corporation and partnership accounting and tax concepts

Salary Range

Attivo offers a competitive base plus bonus, and opportunities for advancement. The starting salary range for the Director of Tax is approximately $200,000 to $235,000 per year plus bonus.

Benefits for full-time employees include: Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance (100% coverage for employees on base plan, 70% coverage for additional family members), participation in Flexible Spending Accounts and 401(k), 3 weeks PTO, voluntary Life Insurance & Disability plans, and work-from-home allowance. Primary caregivers and others requiring a flexible work schedule or reduced hours are encouraged to apply; benefits may be prorated for part-time hires.
