We are seeking a Director, Polymer Sciences, to join Aspect’s research and development team and lead the development and optimization of next-generation natural and synthetic biomaterials for manufacturing hydrogel-based bioprinted tissue therapeutics. Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Preclinical Research and Development, you will drive the strategic identification, evaluation, and implementation of biomaterial technologies that align with the long-term vision for Aspect’s bioprinted tissue therapeutic product. In this role, you will set the direction for polymer synthesis, formulation, and characterization, ensuring materials meet the stringent regulatory requirements for biocompatibility, stability, and function in therapeutic applications. As a key strategic leader, you will define and execute a roadmap for biomaterial innovation, translating cutting-edge polymer research into scalable, clinically viable applications. You will also collaborate cross-functionally with teams in bioengineering, translational sciences, and process development to enhance biomaterial capabilities, driving the development of breakthrough bioprinted tissue therapeutics.
Responsibilities
- Identify novel biomaterial technologies and develop strategies for evaluation of materials that meet bioprinted tissue therapeutic requirements, including biocompatibility and positive host tissue response.
- Lead and oversee polymer synthesis, formulation, and material characterization for hydrogel-based natural and synthetic biomaterials.
- Oversee the design, development, and optimization of novel biomaterials for use in bioprinted tissue therapeutic applications, ensuring their physicochemical, mechanical, and functional properties align with therapeutic requirements.
- Establish and implement analytical methods for material characterization, including rheology, degradation kinetics, crosslinking mechanisms, and bioactivity assessments.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with bioengineers, cell biologists, and translational teams to tailor biomaterials for tissue-specific applications.
- Ensure processes are transferred to the bioprinted tissue therapeutic manufacturing team and support the development of process validation protocols and reports, ensuring high-quality documentation to support regulatory filings.
- Liaise with key opinion leaders (KOLs), and Contract Research Organizations (CROs) to further accelerate our internal and partnered programs.
- Build and lead a high-performing biomaterials team, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence.
- Drive intellectual property generation, including patents and publications, to strengthen Aspect Biosystems’ leadership in biomaterials science.
- Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and trends in biomaterials, hydrogels, and regenerative medicine to inform R&D strategy and product development.
Qualifications
