Medical Editor - Ashfield MedComms, Inizio Health

Job purpose:

To work alongside Medical & Scientific Services (M&SS) teams, editing material for scientific and linguistic content* and having responsibility for editorial accuracy and consistency of all materials edited

*Originating content of manuscripts and slides, along with the interpretation and accuracy of scientific data, is generally the responsibility of the Medical Writer

Key objective

  • To assist the Medical & Scientific Services (M&SS) teams in the development and delivery of high-quality medical education and communications materials for the pharmaceutical industry and other educational bodies
  • To encourage best practice, efficiency and use of robust processes across M&SS support staff and within the wider team and proactively suggest changes where necessary
  • To thoroughly evaluate content and make suggestions for improvements

 

 

Core duties

  • Thorough editing and checking of content for accuracy and consistency, highlighting any suggestions for improvements, or reduced wordcounts, as required
  • Preparation and submission of manuscripts to journals, including journal research to suggest appropriate/recommended targets
  • English edit of abstracts/posters/manuscripts from Authors whose primary language is not English, including direct liaison with authors and clients, as required
  • Liaison with authors (e.g. to obtain/set up log-in details, conflicts of interest, author forms), journals (for manuscript queries) and clients
  • Incorporation and rationalisation of client or author comments to text, where possible
  • Editing of presentations to meet styling requirements and improve layout/content
  • Production editing of material generated by journals (proofs) or studio
  • Undertake specific writing projects, including development of biographies and minutes, and newsletter content, as required
  • Support with data checking of content against original references
  • Reference linking in reviewing software (e.g. Veeva), as required
  • To support with mentoring of more junior team members

  • Booking jobs into Studio, as required

 

Technical competencies/skills required

  • Excellent eye for detail
  • Ensures copy is grammatically and factually accurate, precise and readable following editing
  • Ensures accuracy of data when data checking is performed
  • Ensures graphical work (e.g. slides) is tidy, well constructed and conforms to templates and styles, including colours, typography and layout
  • Proactively offers advice relating to project queries
  • Shows an awareness of, and conforms to, industry codes of practice
  • Demonstrates project-management skills, ensuring that work is delivered to budget and deadlines
  • Supports others in the preparation of accurate and timely budgets and / or schedules, as required
  • Proactively identifies business-development opportunities and contributes to proposal / pitch activity, when required
  • Complies with internal information systems (e.g. databases) and any account-specific trackers etc. ensuring they are up to date and accurate
  • Ensures that internal resources (e.g. folders) are organised and managed in a way that maximises and enhances client service
  • Communicates internally and externally in a professional tone and in a manner that is adherent to appropriate compliance guidelines

 

Reports to:

Senior editorial team member, including Principal Medical Editor, Senior Medical Editor, Scientific Director and others, as appropriate

Qualification requirements

Essential: degree-level qualification demonstrating scientific or linguistic expertise

 

Previous work experience

Essential: previous medical communications / relevant journal experience

Desirable: experience in scientific publishing houses or other healthcare-allied professions (e.g. healthcare, pharmaceutical or medical communications setting)
