Your Impact at Ascend Analytics    

The Director of Portfolio Risk Management will lead a team of analysts and support leading-edge decision analysis for Ascend clients operating generation and energy storage assets in wholesale and regulated markets. You will help clients understand power market dynamics and partner with them to develop strategies for managing financial risk. You will independently lead analysis to provide deeper insight into market participation, market rules, and more to help drive differentiated performance for our customers.    

You will develop and mentor a team that independently and proactively identifies opportunities for analytical insight, coaching them through the analysis and refinement of results into client-ready communications, contributing to our culture of ownership and innovation. One must exhibit high levels of leadership and professionalism at all times, including in client engagements. We are seeking talented individuals with a serious commitment to energy analytics and the evolution of the grid towards greater renewable and storage penetration.     
 

Job Responsibilities 

  • Manage project teams and lead client engagements for portfolio management, energy resource valuation, financial risk management, and other client projects 
  • Develop business opportunities that leverage Ascend's core capabilities, software, and services 
  • Lead quantitative analysis and work to deliver client results that are accurate, clearly communicated and meet deadlines  
  • Provide clients with expertise in the areas of analytic modeling for wholesale market participation, asset valuation, risk management, and renewable integration 
  • Devise new approaches to provide support for decision analysis when markets change 
  • Solve complex problems to make critical decisions for energy supply 

 

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a highly quantitative discipline  
  • 8+ years of experience in the energy sector  
  • Expert knowledge of wholesale energy market dynamics and trends   
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to interpret complex analytic solutions into value propositions   
  • Understanding of energy modeling and methods    
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and problem-solve with minimal supervision    
  • Passion for clean energy, renewables, and the clean energy transition   
  • Experience managing complex projects and delivering results to customers  
  • Strong teamwork skills and work ethic 

 

Preferred Qualifications  

  • 5+ years management experience  
  • Proven business development and marketing experience within the energy industry   
  • In-depth knowledge of energy trades and hedging  
  • Direct experience in the electric power industry obtained through work at utilities, consulting firms, regulatory agencies, energy project developers, etc.  
  • Master's or Ph.D. in engineering, science, business, economics, or equivalent experience 

 

Location: 

This position is a hybrid role in Ascend Analytics’ Boulder, CO office.  

 

Compensation: $180,000 - $240,000 base + equity          

Negotiable based on qualifications and experience. Ascend highly values our employees and often pays above industry average.
