Artsy’s mission is to expand the art market to support more artists and art in the world. Artsy has created the world’s largest two-sided art marketplace, with more than 1,000,000 works by 100,000 artists from 4,000 of the world’s leading galleries, auction houses, art fairs, and institutions across 190 countries.
We're looking for a talented, creative, and strategic leader to join Artsy as our Design Director and help establish the product design discipline.
At Artsy, we are a collaborative and supportive team of designers that are driven by learning, strong design fundamentals, strategic thinking informed by research, and delivering meaningful value. We strive to create an environment where each elevates the work of the other. Every product designer cross-collaborates across the org to set a collective vision and shape our roadmap.
As the Design Director, you will define the creative standards across Artsy, setting the vision for product design, while fostering a strong team of product designers. You'll work collaboratively with other leaders and executives across the company to create an environment where the value of product design and research is understood by all—where thoughtful, intuitive, well-crafted product design can thrive.
To be successful in this role, you will have a keen and skilled ability to create beautiful and compelling user-centric designs, while balancing the wider business needs. Above all, you are an experienced leader who is motivated to contribute to the future of our platform, and who will unify and inspire a team of designers to contribute to the collective Artsy design vision.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Partner with leaders and teams across the org to set the vision for Artsy’s brand and holistic visual experience.
-
Lead a team of designers, providing direction and mentorship. Champion and support team and cross-team collaboration, processes, and cultivate team growth.
-
Develop strategy, roadmaps, research studies, and pipelines. Partner with leadership in product, engineering, and data to design and develop world-class digital interfaces that solve user needs.
-
Mentor a team of strong product designers, providing support to develop skills in user experience, visual design, customer-oriented strategic thinking, iterative product strategy informed by research, universal inclusive design, and relationship building with collaborators.
-
Be a pillar for digital design at Artsy; staying in the know of the latest design trends and developments in order to champion new and innovative ideas.
Candidate Requirements:
-
10 + years of experience working in a luxury, global, commerce and/or creative marketplace.
-
Strong portfolio rooted in digital visual design and product design; spanning across a wide range of channels.
-
You have exceptional communication skills and feel comfortable presenting ideas and projects to a wide audience.
-
You are ambitious, passionate about design, and have experience meeting company goals and achieving the best results for the business. Most of all, you're interested in building beautiful user-centered designs.
-
Experience in holistic product design across platforms, product strategy, product and marketing communications, and design management. You have experience translating product strategy into exceptional design; with a deep understanding of all creative disciplines from conceptual to executional.
-
Experience people managing and building teams through openness, feedback, and support in a fast-paced environment.
-
Deep understanding of design fundamentals (typography, composition, balance, pacing, narrative), and maintain a high standard for quality of output.
-
Knowledge of brand design processes and how to best partner with product design
