Meet the team:

The Autonomy Software team is responsible for designing, developing and maintaining all onboard software that leads to the system’s decision making.  Generally this covers the underlying infrastructure such as the operating system, runtime, sensor drivers, logging, etc. as well as the applications layer that oversees the vehicle behavior (localization, perception, prediction, planning and control).

The Director of Software Engineering oversees a small team of senior staff software engineers across the United States and Europe and is responsible for orchestrating the cross functional organization wide plans to deliver on the next evolution of the system: driverless operations.  The Director is responsible for working closely with the Systems, Engineering Integration and Test (SEIT) organization to ensure sufficient test coverage of the system in various modalities (sim, resim, structured tests, public roads), and working with all Autonomy teams to ensure there are holistic cross functional designs with robust technical solutions and meticulous implementations.   

The Director role is responsible for personnel management tasks including hiring diverse high output teams, creating an inclusive work environment, defining key results, driving success towards business metrics, mentoring staff at all levels, boosting employee performance, communicating team status, upholding Argo’s core values, and more.

What you’ll do: 

  • Establish and implement the strategic direction of Argo’s autonomy software engineering team in the progression towards initial driverless testing, and then an expansion to ever increasing ODD complexity
  • Identify and implement new technologies and systems to improve the autonomous vehicle 
  • Establish, implement and uphold engineering and development policies, practices, standards, and security measures to optimize operations
  • Drive team growth and development through inclusive hiring and career development
  • Closely collaborate with engineering teams and various functional domain executive leaders to develop, prioritize and refine the AV stack, strategy and future capabilities roadmap
  • Advise on priorities for our AI platform teams to develop required tooling
  • Ensure that design requirements are met and oversee the consistency of user experience  

What you'll need to succeed:

  • Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience leading engineering teams at a Director or VP level
  • A proven record of success leading challenging and complex engineering development programs
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain approach to all levels in the organization including key stakeholders
  • A hyper-organized mindset and an ability to manage cross functional teams developing complex systems across multiple time zones
  • The ability to travel periodically to Argo’s engineering offices, fleet operations cities, and partners  
  • The adept capability to produce clear, concise, and complete engineering communications
  • A record of delivering projects successfully and working in a fast paced environment
  • Stellar teamwork and interpersonal skills in an engineering setting
  • Strong persuasion skills to engage with Argo, Volkswagen Group, and Ford Motor Company Executive Leadership
  • The ability to quickly learn broad domain knowledge in robotics and automotive engineering
  • A sound sense of rigorous judgment and a methodical approach to solving problems
  • Experience operationalizing engineering teams and making teams radically more efficient
