The Sensors Hardware team at Argo is responsible for defining and delivering the sensing systems that enable our self driving system to perceive the world. The External Lidar engineer will work with a team of engineers on requirements definition, test development, performance evaluation, and deployment of advanced automotive lidar systems that serve as critical inputs to Argo’s self-driving system. External lidar engineers work with a cross-functional team of Argo hardware and software engineers as well as outside suppliers to actualize designs and bring them into production.
What you’ll do:
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners in perception software, vehicle interfaces, and systems engineering to define functional requirements for automotive lidar systems
- Develop and execute methods for verification and validation of lidar systems
- Design and develop new test setups to collect data and characterize lidar performance in the lab and on vehicles
- Write code to analyze lidar point cloud data and simulate lidar performance
- Conduct trade studies, benchmark prototype lidar hardware, and keep abreast of new product developments and trends
- Work with contract engineering and contract manufacturing partners to guide and optimize design of lidar architecture
- Review and analyze lidar performance data from suppliers
- Drive failure analysis and debug efforts related to lidar bring-up and deployment on fleet vehicles
- Draft and maintain engineering documentation defining functional requirements, statements of work, and test specifications
What we’re looking for:
- Degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or a related field
- Hands-on experience with sensor hardware in a design, integration, or testing role
- Strong Python and/or Matlab skills, with experience in point cloud analysis desired
- Strong understanding of lidar first principles
- Familiarity with lidar performance metrics like range accuracy and probability of detection
- Experience writing concise, clear, and detailed engineering documentation
- Experience developing design requirements, conducting trade studies, executing design analysis / simulation, integrating prototypes, conducting verification / validation testing, debugging design failures, and deploying designs to production
- Strong presentation and communication skills
- Prefer candidates with experience working with lidar data for perception applications
- Prefer candidates with experience working in a Linux environment
- Prefer candidates with experience in functional testing, reliability testing, and qualification of opto-mechanical or opto-electrical systems
- Prefer candidates with experience with hardware components for robotics / automotive systems
- Passion for solving challenging, impactful problems
- A record of owning projects successfully and working in a fast paced environment
