The Arc Institute is a new scientific institution conducting curiosity-driven basic science and technology development to understand and treat complex human diseases. Headquartered in Palo Alto, California, Arc is an independent research organization founded on the belief that many important research programs will be enabled by new institutional models. Arc operates in partnership with Stanford University, UCSF, and UC Berkeley.

 

While the prevailing university research model has yielded many tremendous successes, we believe in the importance of institutional experimentation as a way to make progress. These include:

 

  • Funding: Arc fully funds Core Investigators’ (PIs’) research groups, liberating scientists from the typical constraints of project-based external grants.

About the position

We are seeking a Research Associate II to join the Konermann laboratory at the Arc Institute. In this position, you will contribute to developing an in vivo functional genomic platform to study brain development.

You will have the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment and gain skills across multiple disciplines, including neuroscience, CRISPR technologies, multi-omics, and computational biology. This position offers a unique chance for a highly motivated and curious researcher to apply cutting-edge technologies to neuroscience research. 

This is a great opportunity for candidates looking to enroll in a PhD program in the future, as you will be involved in designing projects from the ground up and co-authoring papers. The ideal candidate must have previous experience with animal work and the motivation to learn and apply new skills to solve complex questions in neuroscience.

In this position, you will

  • Assist with research planning, execution, analysis, troubleshooting, and data interpretation with a high degree of independence and continued support from the rest of the team 
  • Be responsible for colony management, animal handling, and genotyping
  • Perform in vivo experiments, including stereotaxic surgeries, anesthesia, injections
  • Perform tissue collection and processing 
  • Maintain an organized and detailed lab notebook
  • Analyze and present data at subgroup meetings and seminars
  • Comply with Federal, Arc’s, and local IACUC/AAALAC regulations for animal research
  • Adhere to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, appropriate handling of hazardous/biological materials, controlled drugs, and animals 

 

Job Requirements

  • BS/MS or equivalent professional experience in biology, neuroscience, genetics, or another relevant field 
  • 2+ years of relevant experience (including independent lab work during your undergraduate studies) incorporating in vivo approaches
  • Extensive experience with animal handling, dosing by various routes (IP, SC, and IV), as well as stereotaxic surgeries
  • Prior experience with dissections and tissue preparation for histology and/or NGS 
  • Extensive experience preparing fresh frozen and fixed sections, using both cryostat and vibratome.
  • Experience with flow cytometry is preferable but not required for this position

 

The base salary for this position is $73,700. This amount does not include benefits or other forms of compensation.
