The Arc Institute is a new scientific institution that conducts curiosity-driven basic science and technology development to understand and treat complex human diseases. Headquartered in Palo Alto, California, Arc is an independent research organization founded on the belief that many important research programs will be enabled by new institutional models. Arc operates in partnership with Stanford University, UCSF, and UC Berkeley.

While the prevailing university research model has yielded many tremendous successes, we believe in the importance of institutional experimentation as a way to make progress. These include:

  • Funding: Arc will fully fund Core Investigator’s (PI’s) research groups, liberating scientists from the typical constraints of project-based external grants.
  • Technology: Biomedical research has become increasingly dependent on complex tooling. Arc Technology Centers develop, optimize and deploy rapidly advancing experimental and computational technologies in collaboration with Core Investigators.

With $650M in committed funding, the vision in the first 2-3 years is to grow to a team of roughly 150 team members, with plans for further significant growth over the decade ahead. 

The Gilbert Lab at the Arc Institute ( and University of California, San Francisco is seeking applications for a staff research scientist to be based at the Arc Institute in Palo Alto, CA in the areas of Mammalian Models and Functional Genomics. Our group develops CRISPR epigenetic editing and functional genomics approaches which we are seeking to deploy in vivo to tackle big questions in developmental biology, cancer biology, gene & cell therapy, and beyond.

Some of our recent projects to date include:

  1. Development of CRISPRoff and CRISPRon as programmable epigenetic memory writers and erasers (Cell, 2021)
  2. An integrated functional and clinical genomics approach reveals genes driving aggressive metastatic prostate cancer (Nature Communications, 2021)
  3. Defining mechanisms by which diverse linked chemotypes (e.g. bitopic inhibitors or PROTACs)  that break conventional notions of drug like molecules are trafficked into human cells (accepted at Science, 2022)

Ongoing projects in our lab include developing new in vivo and in vitro functional genomics screening approaches, developing new epigenome editing technologies, and their application in cancer cells, primary cells and in vivo.

Compensation will be competitive with industry jobs relative to experience level and background.


In this position, the Scientist/Sr. Scientist will:

  • Work as part of a fully funded team to conduct experiments involving development of in vivo high-throughput functional genomics platforms, development of new in vivo gene & cell therapy approaches and the creation of new CRISPR mammalian models for developmental biology and disease research
  • Collaborate closely with the PIs on planning and executing scientific research projects
  • Lead key research projects; provide guidance on project strategy, experimental design, data analysis, and troubleshooting
  • Help hire, mentor and manage 1-2 research associates
  • Keep up-to-date on advances in the field by reading the literature and attending key conferences
  • Develop and provide training to lab personnel as needed, develop standardized protocols for the labs
  • Assist with preparing manuscripts, abstracts, presentations

Job Requirements:

  • PhD degree in a relevant life sciences field.
  • Experience working with mammalian models, including generation of transgenic animals and phenotypic analysis.
  • The following specific areas of expertise would be considered an asset for this role: in vivo delivery of nucleic acids (viral or non-viral), in vivo genetic screens, gene & cell therapy, stem cell culture, and stem cell modification.
  • Additional areas of expertise which are considered an asset for this role are: single cell RNA-seq, spatial profiling, flow cytometry, microscopy.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills is required for research presentations, SOP development, and publications
  • Experience and enthusiasm for mentoring research trainees
  • The successful candidate will be an ambitious self-starter, be motivated to apply his/her skills to diverse projects and enjoy working in a collaborative and fast-paced team environment
