About Arc Institute

The Arc Institute is a new scientific institution that conducts curiosity-driven basic science and technology development to understand and treat complex human diseases. Headquartered in Palo Alto, California, Arc is an independent research organization founded on the belief that many important research programs will be enabled by new institutional models. Arc operates in partnership with Stanford University, UCSF, and UC Berkeley.

While the prevailing university research model has yielded many tremendous successes, we believe in the importance of institutional experimentation as a way to make progress. These include:

  • Funding: Arc will fully fund Core Investigator’s (PI’s) research groups, liberating scientists from the typical constraints of project-based external grants.
  • Technology: Biomedical research has become increasingly dependent on complex tooling. Arc Technology Centers develop, optimize and deploy rapidly advancing experimental and computational technologies in collaboration with Core Investigators. 
  • Support: Arc aims to provide first-class support—operationally, financially and scientifically—that will enable scientists to pursue long-term high risk, high reward research that can meaningfully advance progress in disease cures, including neurodegeneration, cancer, and immune dysfunction.
  • Culture: We believe that culture matters enormously in science and that excellence is difficult to sustain. We aim to create a culture that is focused on scientific curiosity, a deep commitment to truth, broad ambition, and selfless collaboration.

With $650M in committed funding, the vision in the first 2-3 years is to grow to a team of roughly 150 team members, with plans for further significant growth over the decade ahead. 

About the position

Our team is growing quickly and we’re looking for a strong partner to join our organization.  A successful Research Operations Program Manager will provide best in class support and project management to Arc’s research teams and act as the liaison between the research teams and operational teams. This role will also project manage all lab transitions from affiliate Universities to Arc. A successful candidate for this position is passionate about operational excellence and collaboration, and motivated to make Arc Institute an exciting and excellent place to do science.

In this position you will

  • Be the front face of onboarding for all lab members, including the evaluation and intake of incoming labs and their needs to ensure that things are set up from equipment to supplies, training and more.
  • Find operational excellence opportunities by understanding the scientific workflows at Arc in order to optimize shared lab spaces and technology centers
  • Set up instrument training, and re-training.
  • Optimize workflows and standardize and share protocols internally 
  • Understand who is the “go-to” for given techniques.
  • Be the point person for special projects that arise over time (space planning, signage, safety, dry lab needs).
  • Build the infrastructure to encourage collaborations between wet and dry labs.
  • Contribute to and support communications and cultural initiatives.

Requirements

  • 7-15 years of operational support in a wet and dry laboratory scientific setting.
  • 5-10 years of experience in managing multiple projects.
  • Strong understanding of workflows in shared laboratories.
  • Strong ability to effectively and quickly build relationships and establish trust, respect, competence, and confidence. 
  • Goal oriented with passion for independently working through defined goals, metrics and actionable plans to achieve desired outcomes; 
  • Strong sense of urgency.
  • Highly organized, with a drive to increase organization of workflows and information across the organization
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to articulate ideas clearly and succinctly in a variety of settings and styles and strong influence, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • Act as a catalyst for formulating a collaborative environment to achieve a common purpose across cross functional teams.
  • Able to calmly and positively navigate ambiguity, shifting priorities and rapid change. 
  • Proven track record in supporting organizational transformation and change initiatives.
