America250 is a multiyear effort to commemorate the semiquincentennial, or 250th anniversary, of the United States. The purpose of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, created by Congress, and the corresponding America250 Foundation is to catalyze a more perfect union by designing and leading the most comprehensive and inclusive celebration in our country’s history. America250 represents a coalition of public and private partners all working to create initiatives and programs that honor our first 250 years and inspire Americans to imagine our next 250. The commemoration period began in 2020, culminates on July 4, 2026, and officially concludes in 2027.

Position.  Reporting to the President and CEO and serving as a key member of the Foundation’s Senior Management Team, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) will lead America250’s five-year, $150M+ fundraising effort and be responsible for the fundraising and philanthropic revenue-generating needs of the organization. The CDO will have the opportunity to build his/her own development team to implement the fundraising roadmap designed in partnership with our fundraising advisory firm. The plan includes a vetted case for support, a well-researched list of top prospects, leadership and committee recommendations, as well as systems and staffing suggestions.

Responsibilities.  The CDO will drive and manage all fundraising, philanthropic revenue-generation, and related stewardship, communication and event activity and ensure that America250 achieves its revenue goals within the stated timeline. This includes:

  • Leading the Development Department to:
    • identify, cultivate and solicit corporate, foundation and major gift donors
    • drive and manage all Committee and Council fundraising activities
    • design and implement a comprehensive online donor program
    • develop and execute a robust stewardship program
  • Leading the Leadership Recruitment Group to:
    • coordinate strategy and solicit Honorary Chairs and Co-Chairs
    • shepherd the Honorary Chairs and Co-Chairs relationships and engagement plan
  • Managing and working with the Commission Development Committee to:
    • identify, cultivate and solicit corporate, foundation and major gift donors
    • develop fundraising strategies toward goals
    • coordinate outreach and solicitations
  • Managing and working with the Leadership Council to:
    • identify, cultivate and solicit corporate, foundation and major gift donors
    • develop fundraising strategies toward goals
    • coordinate outreach and solicitations
  • Partnering with the CEO to:
    • build a development staff
    • build an annual development plan
    • plan annual budget and activities
    • manage strategic fundraising firm
  • Partnering with the VP of Marketing/Branding to:
    • identify, cultivate, and solicit key industry and target company sponsorships
    • advance a merchandise and retail sales plan, including identifying a national partner
  • Partnering with the VP of Communications/PR and VP of Marketing/Branding to:
    • serve as the primary spokesperson for donor relations for both the Commission and the Foundation
    • develop and execute a world class donor communications effort
    • work with celebrity ambassadors and broadcast outlets on public service announcements promoting America250 programs, events, and fundraising efforts
  • Partnering with the VP of Programs to:
    • drive sponsorships for National Signature Programs and other special events
    • actively promote National Signature Programs for maximum exposure and broad citizen participation and engagement
  • Partnering with the Director of Finance to:
    • track revenue goals and progress

Qualifications.

  • A passion for America250’s purpose and mission
  • A servant leader who actively supports others on the team and considers the respectful treatment of their colleagues as an imperative
  • Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in successful fundraising either in-house or with an agency
  • Creative instincts and experience
  • Exceptional management skills; the ability to influence key audiences and individuals
  • Poise and confidence needed to establish credibility and respect with high visibility audiences and individuals
  • Excellent personal and persuasive oral communications skills

Additional Position Information.  This is a full-time position with the America250 Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit. The start date for this position is June/July 2021.  The America250 Foundation office is located in Washington, D.C but is expected to move to Alexandria, VA near the King Street Metro. The America250 office is temporarily closed due to COVID-19, and all employees are currently remote. When it is safe to return to the office, staff will work together to establish a hybrid in-office/work-from-home plan.  Nationwide travel for this position will be required. America250 staff will follow OMB travel guidance, and travel for all America250 Foundation staff will only resume when it is fully safe to do so. Compensation. Base salary starting at $175K annually.
