Company Overview:

Ambiq's mission is to develop the lowest-power semiconductor solutions to enable intelligent devices everywhere by developing the lowest-power semiconductor solutions to drive a more energy-efficient, sustainable, and data-driven world. Ambiq has helped leading manufacturers worldwide develop products that last weeks on a single charge (rather than days), while delivering a maximum feature set in compact industrial designs. Ambiq's goal is to take Artificial Intelligence (AI) where it has never gone before in mobile and portable devices, using Ambiq's advanced ultra-low power system on chip (SoC) solutions. Ambiq has shipped more than 200 million units as of March 2023. For more information, visit www.ambiq.com.

Our innovative and fast-moving teams of research, development, production, marketing, sales, and operations are spread across several continents, including the US (Austin and San Jose), Taiwan (Hsinchu), China (Shenzhen and Shanghai), Japan (Tokyo), and Singapore. We value continued technology innovation, fanatical attention to customer needs, collaborative decision-making, and enthusiasm for energy efficiency. We embrace candidates who also share these same values. The successful candidate must be self-motivated, creative, and comfortable learning and driving exciting new technologies. We encourage and nurture an environment for growth and opportunities to work on complex, interesting, and challenging projects that will create a lasting impact. Come join us on our quest for 100 billion devices. The endpoint intelligence revolution starts here.

The qualified candidate should be an engineer with experience developing advanced analog/mixed-signal circuits. Experience should include high-level modeling, spec definition, transistor-level design, layout, test, evaluation, and debugging of prototype ICs. The ideal candidate will have a strong intuitive and analytical understanding of transistor-level design, including stability, matching, transient and noise analysis, low power design trade-offs, and architectural and systems issues. A deep knowledge of transistor operation in the subthreshold regime is highly desirable. The PMU lead must work extensively with digital, applications, and product engineers, so familiarity with digital, lab, and product test issues is highly desirable.

This role will work with the SoC and Architecture teams to determine PMU requirements and with analog and digital design teams on implementation. This work may also involve interacting with external IP vendors. The designs will be leading-edge geometries.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated, results-driven, and a good communicator. The candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the design, from technical oversight to project tracking, and will require associated skills and experience.

The person in this role will design ultra-low power, highly efficient PMU systems. These systems will be used in Ambiq’s MCU products to ensure extra-long battery life. The person will drive the design through all phases of architecture, modeling, schematic design, and layout supervision. They will also help support the integration of their design and bring it up in the field.

  • Provide technical supervision of junior engineers
  • PMU architectural design and verification
  • Transistor-level analog IC circuit design and verification
  • Directly conduct or closely supervise the analog circuit layout
  • Conduct design reviews and resolve action items generated as a result of these reviews
  • Attend design reviews to provide input and guidance to other designers
  • Work with digital designers to interface with and verify analog circuit block
  • Assist in prototype chip testing to validate analog circuit blocks
  • Develop and implement a manufacturing test plan for analog circuit blocks; support efficient test program development
  • Support marketing in product definition
  • Support product engineering to meet manufacturing/production needs
  • Support applications engineering to meet customer needs

Experience Required

The qualified candidate should be an engineer with experience developing advanced analog/mixed-signal circuits. Experience should include high-level modeling, spec definition, transistor level design, layout, test, evaluation, and debugging of prototype ICs. The ideal candidate will have a strong intuitive and analytical understanding of transistor-level design including stability, matching, transient and noise analysis, low power design trade-offs, and architectural and systems issues. A deep knowledge of transistor operation in the subthreshold regime is highly desirable. The PMU lead must work extensively with digital, applications, and product engineers, so a familiarity with digital, lab, and product test issues is highly desirable.

Key Qualifications

  • Experience designing highly efficient voltage regulators
  • Thorough knowledge of DC/DC CCM and DCM modes
  • Experience developing algorithms for DC/DC controllers to maximize load regulation while ensuring stability
  • Master’s degree or equivalent training in related field and 10+ years of related experience. An advanced degree (e.g., PhD) may reduce the minimum experience required.
  • Experience in the full design flow, from specification to circuit design/verification to prototype testing to high volume production support
  • Experience in top level verification, integration of IP blocks, LVS, DRC, FILL and tape out experience desirable.
  • Solid background in semiconductor physics and signal processing
  • Experience designing subthreshold-biased or ultra-low power analog circuits is extremely desirable
  • Experience with mixed mode simulators and Verilog-ams is extremely desirable
  • Experience working with a team of analog and digital designers in a mixed-signal environment
  • Experience guiding layout trade-offs for performance and size
  • Experience designing analog circuits for testability using special test modes, production trimming, etc.
