ABOUT THE ROLE

The School Nurse at ALU will assist in the management of medical operations on and off-campus under the supervision of the Student Life Counsellor. The duties include supporting students with medical processes, helping to coordinate medical programmes and workshops, managing first aid kit, organizing transport for medical purposes, assisting students to follow up on claims, collecting and distributing medications, facilitating individual-based checkups and general screening. This role involves promoting health education, delivering direct nursing care, managing medical emergencies, and supporting mental health initiatives. The ideal candidate will have experience in general nursing, mental health, and first aid, ensuring a holistic approach to student wellness.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

1) General Nursing Care:
Conduct health assessments and administer medications and treatments as prescribed.
● Manage chronic illnesses and coordinate care with external healthcare providers.
● Maintain accurate and confidential health records for students.
● Provide first aid and emergency care in response to accidents and illnesses on/off campus.

2) Mental Health Support:
● Collaborate with the counseling team to develop and implement mental health programs.
● Conduct mental health screenings and refer students to Students Life Counselor.
● Facilitate workshops and training on mental health awareness and coping strategies.

3) First Aid and Emergency Preparedness:
Train staff and students in first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) techniques.
● Develop and implement emergency response plans for the campus.
● Ensure first aid kits and emergency supplies are stocked and accessible.
● Coordinate with local health authorities and emergency services when necessary.

4) Health Education and Promotion:
Design and deliver health education programs to promote healthy lifestyles.
● Organize health awareness events and campaigns on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, and disease prevention.
● Provide individualized health education to students.
● Collaborate with the wellness team to integrate health education into the overall wellness strategy.


5) Communication
● Respond to students’ specific queries on the medical system, reinforce knowledge of medical processes via internal channels (WhatsApp, Hangouts, chats)
● Communicate with the internal and external stakeholders to smoothly run operations or quickly manage medical emergencies
● Create communications content via Canvas and ALU social media platforms: weekly Medical Mondays and weekly Medical posts.


6) Administrative Duties:
● Maintain and update medical records and documentation in compliance with legal and institutional policies.
● Prepare reports on health services, including statistics on health trends and incidents.
● Assist in the development of health policies and procedures for the institution.
● Participate in meetings and committees related to student health and wellness.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Registered Nurse with a valid nursing license.
  • Bachelor’s degree in General Nursing and have advanced qualification in mental health.
  • Certificate in First aid support and training
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in general nursing, mental health, and first aid.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care.
  • Proven experience with building successful systems and/or processes
  • Strong collaborative and team-oriented interpersonal skills
  • Detail-oriented, accurate, organized and efficient. Ability to work independently, handle large volumes of work, and flexible to work evenings and weekends where necessary.
  • Ability to handle information in a confidential and professional manner.
  • Skilled in the use of Google Suite products
