What You Will Contribute To Altos

An exciting opportunity is available for Scientists to join the Chalut group at Altos Labs, Cambridge Institute of Science (Cambridge, UK). We are seeking very highly motivated, scientifically visionary, creative, and collaborative individuals who are passionate and dedicated about employing their expertise to unravel the deep biology of tissue health. This includes the elucidation of age-related changes in tissue and organs, particularly in the extracellular matrix of the stromal niche and signalling from the niche, and how that ultimately drives tissue function.

The Chalut Lab

The Chalut Lab has been a pioneer in demonstrating the importance of mechanical signalling from the extracellular matrix (ECM) for cell function, in development, disease and ageing. Recently, we have focused on animal tissues and tissue models, to show the centrality of the ECM in driving loss of tissue function. We work across multiple tissues to understand how the ECM niche, particularly composition and function, is changing with age, and which of those changes drive loss of tissue function. We are using our findings to predict and develop interventions in the ECM. At Altos, we are devoted to bringing a new understanding to the role of the niche in tissue function and how to perform interventions in the ECM to alleviate age-related disease.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a research area around age-associated changes of the ECM within a new tissue for the lab, preferably the musculoskeletal system.
  • Work together with others in the lab to advance technology to assay tissue health and changes in the ECM.
  • Work together with others to develop animal models to test interventions in ECM to alleviate loss of tissue function.
  • Collaborate widely across Altos to multiply efforts to gain insight into the centrality of tissue function in ageing.
  • Engage in ground-breaking and innovative science and in Altos scientific activities.
  • Present data to a variety of audiences including senior executives through entry-level employees.
  • Carry out research projects in collaboration with the principal investigator, members of the group and other labs within Altos.

Who You Are

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Life Sciences or equivalent field
  • Molecular and cell biology; prior expertise in tissue biology, ECM biology, and/or aging biology
  • Extensive experience with in vivo work and/or experience in mammalian tissue culture (including primary cells)
  • Knowledge and strong interest in studying age-related molecular changes.
  • A strong sense of collective ownership of projects within the group and Altos.
  • Critical, visionary, and creative thinking with an ability to formulate scientific questions, design strategies, and implement plans effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and with others.
  • A demonstrated high productivity and ability to complete work promptly.
