What You Will Contribute To Altos

The Altos Scalable Modeling and Compute team is seeking a software engineer to help develop scalable infrastructure to support the scientific compute and machine learning (ML) needs of Altos scientists. You will be part of the compute team that develops collaborative interactive environments, containerized workflow systems, and version-controlled data storage systems that operate on top of cloud-based, on-premises, and hybrid infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a small agile team at the Cambridge Institute of Science (CI) to develop software systems to support the needs of scientific and machine learning (ML) compute users across Altos Labs
  • Design, develop, deploy, and operate on-premises and cloud-based software infrastructure for high-throughput computing (HTC), high-performance computing (HPC), and machine learning (ML) applications
  • Continuously strive to eliminate toil through automation and improved tooling
  • Focus on delivering well-crafted working software that adds value for end users

Who You Are

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS or MS degree in Computer Science, or equivalent technical experience
  • Experience developing useful software using both compiled (e.g. Rust, Golang) and interpreted (e.g. Python, TypeScript) languages
  • Familiar with the Linux operating system and bash command-line shell
  • Experience with containerization technologies (e.g. docker, LXC)
  • Enjoy working closely with a small agile team to craft robust, scalable, functional software systems
  • Intellectual curiosity and an interest in scientific research

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with scientific workflow systems (e.g. CWL, WDL, Nextflow)
  • Experience with batch scheduling systems for HPC/ML environments (e.g. SLURM)
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) technologies and tools (e.g. terraform, ansible)
  • Experience with AWS-based cloud infrastructure

The salary range for Cambridge, UK:

  • Software Engineer I: £42,500 - £57,500
  • Software Engineer II: £58,650 - £79,350

Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
