About the Role:

We are looking for a skilled and driven Senior Design Systems Designer to join our expanding product design team. In this pivotal role, you'll spearhead the enhancement of our evolving design system, focusing on maximizing efficiency, consistency, and scalability. 

Working in close collaboration with product designers and design system engineers, you will be instrumental in expanding our component library to robustly support and accommodate the ongoing growth of our product across diverse missions.

As the chief evangelist for the system, you will play a critical ownership role as it evolves – advocating for its understanding and use across varying engineering and product teams, ensuring consistent user experiences through our components, freeing up resources for greater innovation, and improving cross-team collaboration and communication in our fast-moving product organization.  


About You:

Technical Proficiency

    • Deep expertise in design and prototyping tools: You take pride in ensuring every detail is pixel-perfect. You are highly skilled in using Figma and similar tools. You are also proficient in using and managing design libraries and plugins that enhance design system utility.
    • Understanding of front-end development: Understand the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to communicate effectively with developers and ensure designs are realistically implementable.
    • Material UI: Experience building custom design systems on top of Material UI is a bonus.

Experience with Design Systems

    • Proven track record of creating or leading design systems: Experience building or significantly contributing to a design system, including creating comprehensive style guides, design tokens, and component libraries.
    • A portfolio that includes design system work: You should be able to demonstrate your involvement in design systems through case studies or a portfolio that highlights your methodological approach and final outputs.

Collaboration and Leadership Skills

    • Ability to work across teams: You must demonstrate the capability to collaborate effectively with product designers, developers, and other stakeholders.
    • Leadership and mentorship: Experience leading projects, guiding/educating other designers, setting standards, and promoting best practices.

Strategic Thinking

    • Vision for scalability and evolution: You can show an understanding of how to scale design systems to accommodate future growth, including integrating new technologies and design trends.
    • Problem-solving skills: Adept at identifying and addressing gaps in the design system and finding solutions that enhance design and operational efficiency.

Communication Skills

    • Clear articulation of design decisions: Essential for justifying design choices and explaining the benefits of the design system to stakeholders.
    • Documentation skills: You are a documentation evangelist and must be able to detail the design system comprehensively, making it accessible and understandable for all users.

User-Centric Approach

    • Focus on usability and accessibility: Prioritize making the design system usable and accessible to various designers and developers.

Adaptability and Continuous Learning

    • Staying updated with design trends: Committed to continuous learning and adapting the design system to reflect new insights and technologies.



Responsibilities:

Design System Development and Maintenance:

    • Build and evolve the design system: Develop and refine components, patterns, typography, color schemes, icons, and other design elements that make up the design system.
    • Ensure holistic consistency: Maintain visual and functional consistency across all product interfaces by standardizing design elements and interaction patterns.
    • Component creation and management: Design reusable components and ensure they are modular, adaptable, and easy to use for other designers and developers.
  • Collaboration and Integration:
    • Work closely with product designers: Provide support and guidelines to help them use the design system effectively in their projects.
    • Collaborate with developers: Ensure that the design system translates well into code and meets technical feasibility, enhancing the collaboration between design and development teams.
    • Stakeholder engagement: Regularly engage with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to gather requirements and feedback, ensuring the design system meets all departmental needs.
  • Leadership, Guidance, and Advocacy:
    • Lead design system initiatives: Drive the strategy and vision for the design system, ensuring it supports the product roadmap and business goals.
    • Promote design system culture: Advocate for scalable, sustainable design practices within the company and promote the adoption of the design system.
  • Usability and Accessibility:
    • Improve user experience: Regularly review and optimize components to improve the overall usability and functionality of the product interfaces.
    • Prioritize accessibility: Ensure all components and design elements meet accessibility standards to create inclusive products.
  • Quality Control and Documentation:
    • Champion documentation: Create detailed documentation that is a guideline for effectively using the design system components and principles.
    • Maintain high standards: Establish and implement design quality standards and ensure they are adhered to in every aspect of the product.
    • Conduct audits: Regularly audit existing designs against the design system to identify and rectify discrepancies.
  • Strategic Planning:
    • Scale the design system: Plan and execute strategies to scale the design system as the company grows and develops new products and features.
    • Resource allocation: Help to manage resources and tools necessary for the design system’s maintenance and growth effectively.

 

Requirements:

  • A degree in Design/Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field can be advantageous, though it may not be essential if balanced by significant practical experience.
  • You are a Senior designer with 5+ years of relevant experience with a strong portfolio showcasing case studies detailing processes – with an emphasis on learnings and professional growth/evolution
  • Expertise using Figma
  • Strong understanding of design system best practices, user-centered design principles, and methodologies
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, agile environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • A passion for design systems and documentation and a commitment to delivering exceptional user experiences through an atomic mindset
  • Comfortable, flexible, and skilled in collaborating with global, cross-functional teams

Base Compensation Range*:  $135,000 - $190,000

Additional Components: You may also be offered equity, and a generous benefits program.

*For base compensation, we set standard ranges for all US-based roles based on function, level and geographic location, benchmarked against similar stage growth companies and internal comparables. In order to be compliant with local legislation, as well as to provide greater transparency to candidates, we share salary ranges on all job postings regardless of desired hiring location. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including geographic location as well as candidate experience/expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
