About Alethea

Founded in 2019, Alethea is a tech company that detects and mitigates instances of disinformation and social media manipulation to help clients navigate the new digital reality. We protect clients from the threat of disinformation that targets brands, reputations, employee safety, or financial bottom lines through our industry-leading investigation and remediation services.

Position Summary

The Data Science & Machine Learning team is responsible for developing the models, metrics, and infrastructure needed to detect, assess, and mitigate disinformation, manipulation, and other online harms. We do so by sifting signals of harmful actors, behavior, and content from large, cross-platform datasets and surfacing insights to users in Artemis, Alethea’s platform for monitoring social media manipulation at scale.

We are seeking scientists of all levels to join our growing DS & ML team. As an applied data scientist you will drive research and development in one or more problem spaces related to disinformation, such as coordination, inauthenticity, extremism, calls to violence, or manipulated media. You will carry initiatives from conception to delivery, working closely with domain experts to develop and evaluate effective solutions, machine learning engineers to deploy those solutions at scale, and product managers to clearly communicate insights in Artemis. Along with fellow applied scientists and machine learning engineers, you will institute processes, tools, and workflows to ensure that data and machine learning is used in a responsible, reliable, and reproducible manner across the company. Your work will have high visibility and a significant impact on the company’s direction and success.

  • Collaborate with partners in Engineering, Product, and Design to implement data-informed products and features, such as data visualizations and automated alerts
  • Communicate analyses, experiments, and strategies to a range of audiences, including machine learning engineers, non-technical team members, and executive leadership
  • Contribute to the development of the DS & ML team’s processes, workflows, tech stack, norms, and culture
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior members of the DS & ML team

You may also have

  • Experience with a statistical or machine learning specialty, such as NLP, computer vision, or network science
  • Experience addressing online harms, such as disinformation, coordinated inauthentic behavior, manipulated media, calls to violence, algorithmic manipulation, or hate speech
  • Experience publishing peer-reviewed research in machine learning or computational social science venues, particularly as it relates to disinformation and other online harms
