Acumen’s commitment to India began in 2002 when we deployed capital to Aravind Eye Care Systems and then consequently set up our India office in 2006.The Acumen India team is responsible for finding, vetting, and managing investments in game-changing social enterprises that serve the poor in our portfolio sectors: Healthcare, Education, Agriculture and  Energy.

About the Role – 

The Portfolio Associate will play a key role in the success, development and impact of Acumen’s portfolio in India. The Portfolio Associate also provides support to core investment processes, like maintenance of the portfolio database, coordination with the finance and legal teams and developing a pipeline of investment opportunities.

Specific responsibilities include:

Identifying investment opportunities and due diligence

  • Identifying, cultivating, and reviewing a pipeline of early-stage investment opportunities that serve the targeted demography in our portfolio sectors: Energy (PEII), workforce development, Agriculture.
  • Conducting due diligence and investment analysis, including financial modelling, valuation review and structuring
  • Preparing and presenting investment documentation for review to the Portfolio team before presenting it to Investment Committee

Impact Assessments and Portfolio operations

  • Working along with the Portfolio team in maintaining core portfolio processes, including the Annual Review, scheduling Investment Committee meetings, updating of data on Efront, gdrive, preparing Closing Sets;
  • Work with the Acumen portfolio team to:
    • Analyze and document data-driven explanations for portfolio decisions.
    • Extract and document investment-specific and general insights.
    • Analyze metrics data to identify patterns; and
    • Channel that data to outputs for marketing and fundraising efforts.

Post Investment Support and Metric Evaluation 

  • Assess portfolio company needs related to post-investment support; design and implement post-investment interventions in coordination with the Portfolio team.
  • Support the Portfolio team to design and evaluate key metrics to measure the social and financial returns on investments.
  • Support the Portfolio team to develop a network of advisors including funders, thought leaders, sector and functional experts to help with post investment support.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required. Masters will be a plus.
  • At least 4 years of management consulting or operational experience with a proven track record of delivering operational and management support to companies or internal units OR
  • At least 4 years of principal investing experience, including financial and operational due diligence of private companies.
  • Understanding of early-stage businesses and entrepreneurs is a plus.
  • Good financial, modeling and business analysis skills; demonstrated by prior experience.
  • Familiarity with the social enterprise and impact investing sectors; demonstrated commitment to serving the poor is preferred.
  • Ability to take initiative with research and analysis and produce valuable results in conditions of uncertainty.
  • Excellent operational skills including problem solving and project management skills, including ability to work and deliver projects independently, proactively and under pressure.
  • Excellent relationship and interpersonal skills—courtesy, tact, patience
  • Self-reflective and aligned with Acumen values.
  • Authorization to work in India on a permanent basis.
