ABOUT THE JOB
The ACLU seeks a part-time, temporary position of Research Assistant in the Strategy Office of the Executive Department of the ACLU’s National Office in New York, NY. The position will have a duration from June 15, 2024 to September 30, 2024.
ACLU’s Strategy Office is charged with ensuring that the ACLU works in a coordinated way to protect and advance civil rights and civil liberties in the United States. The office resides within the Executive Department, the visionary center of leadership of the nation’s primary defender of civil liberties. The Executive Department manages the strategy and mission driving the ACLU’s 600+ employees and $350M+ plus operating budget. In addition to the Strategy Office, The Executive Department also includes ACLU’s Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EDIB) team and is also responsible for the ACLU’s national board and special programming, including the Advocacy Institute.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Reporting to the Director of Research, the Research Assistant (RA) will support the evaluation of ACLU’s National Advocacy Institute and related research project conducted by ACLU’s Youth Activism Research Collaboration, a partnership between ACLU and external scholars. ACLU’s National Advocacy Institute trains and supports youth activists focused on various social justice issues. The RA will participate in the evaluation of the impact and implementation of the Institute and assessment of Alumni data, along with accompanying studies using data from current and past Institute participants. The RA will play a pivotal role in dissemination of findings to internal stakeholders, as well as helping to prepare manuscripts for publication.
YOUR DAY TO DAY
- Data Collection: Assist with study measure refinement and administration, including surveys and focus groups
- Data Preparation: Clean and merge quantitative datasets, prepare data for analysis; Clean transcriptions and code qualitative data
- Data Analysis: Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses to address research questions, as needed
- Administrative & Coordination: Participate in project team meetings, liaise with RAs from project partner institutions, handle administrative and coordinating tasks
- Publication & Presentation Support: Develop slide decks and support scholarly publications, participate in briefing presentations to ACLU staff, assist with literature reviews and writing, have opportunity to participate in and co-author project papers/publications

WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Graduate degree or current graduate student in relevant social science discipline (psychology, human development, education, sociology, etc.), or equivalent experience/training, preferred
- Academic or research background in youth activism, organizing, or civic engagement
- Comfort with quantitative and qualitative data management tasks, including cleaning, coding, and merging
- Training in quantitative data analysis, access to and proficiency with SPSS
- Training and/or experience with qualitative research, including focus groups
- Comfort using Microsoft Office and Google products
COMPENSATION
- Compensation: $35/hour
- Time Commitment: 14 hours/week, Specific hours will be determined, but will fall between normal 8-6pm ET business hours
- Duration: June 15, 2024 through September 30, 2024
