ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks a full-time position of Product Design Manager in the Product and Technology Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY.   

The ACLU’s Product & Technology team partners with departments across the ACLU in order to build and maintain innovative, robust and secure digital products and technical systems that accelerate the ACLU’s mission as our nationwide guardian of rights and liberties. We are a team of engineers, designers, product managers and administrators who take pride in creating technical solutions that help raise money, get our message out in the world, mobilize our supporters and manage our data with integrity. 

Reporting to the Head of Product, the Product Design Manager is a player-coach that works with the design team to create digital experiences that educate, inform, and inspire ACLU audiences to engage with and support the ACLU. The Product Design Manager is a highly proficient and autonomous design leader with a consistent positive impact on their team and domain, and they will be responsible for improving both upskilling staff and systems, raising the bar for audience experiences and supporter journeys, maintaining a design system that reinforces trust, transparency, and accessibility across all digital touchpoints.  

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage a small team of designers, leading the team on design quality and skill development 
  • Partners with Product & Technology leaders and ACLU stakeholders to understand goals and requirements through a user-centric mindset, advocating for cohesive, quality supporter experiences  
  • Responsible for leading large or especially complex projects. They should be comfortable working on any part of the end-to-end design lifecycle, including research, a wide range of solution explorations, solution validation, and prototyping
  • Support product designers through all parts of the design process, providing actionable feedback and collaboration on user interfaces through wireframes, mockups, and prototypes, information architecture and user flows, with special consideration for designing efficiently and at scale
  • Models and coaches strong product decision-making through wide-ranging solution exploration and strong rationale aligned to strong hypotheses, user psychology, or existing data 
  • Leads workshops or contributes to product discussions to help build consensus on strategy and feature decisions
  • Invests in design skill growth across the design team and serves as an advocate on design thinking across the Product & Technology team and the ACLU, broadly
  • Supports designers in extending visual brand guidelines to standardized components and new interactive experiences on web and mobile and integrating these patterns into a design system
  • Works effectively with colleagues, demonstrating familiarity with decision-making frameworks and conflict resolution tactics

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Deep experience designing products and experiences end-to-end, with a strong foundation information architecture, UX design, and visual design 
  • Experience building and maintaining design systems and style guides 
  • Strategic problem-solving skills and the capacity to distill complex information into meaningful concepts, ideas, and designs 
  • Experience leading other designers, giving and accepting constructive criticism 
  • Comfortable presenting work to stakeholders and building consensus with product team members
  • Strong familiarity with Figma, including components, libraries, and plugins
  • Deep understanding of responsive web design, web standards, accessibility best practices
  • A positive attitude, open and adaptable, and passionate about good user experience 

COMPENSATION

The annual salary for this position is $168,683 (Level D). This salary is reflective of a position based in New York, NY. This salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting. Note that most of the salaries listed on our job postings reflect New York, NY salaries, where our National offices are headquartered.
