ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks a full-time Director of Analytics Engineering in the Analytics Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York or Remote*. 

ACLU Analytics partners with teams across the organization to enable the ACLU to make smart, evidence-based decisions and bring quantitative insights on our issues to the courtroom and the public. Our team's work ranges from social science research for litigation & advocacy, to analysis & reporting for fundraising and engagement, to building and maintaining our data infrastructure for both use cases. We strive to ensure the ACLU leads by example in the ethical use of data and technology. This includes supporting our privacy and security standards, pushing for transparent data practices from government and corporate actors, and helping to steward high standards for algorithmic fairness, accountability, and transparency. 

Reporting to the Head of Analytics, the Director of Analytics Engineering will be an analytics-focused manager that helps increase our impact by upgrading our existing data and analytics infrastructure and capabilities to enable data-driven advocacy, fundraising, and litigation work.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Hire, train, support, and directly supervise analytics engineers and vendor teams  
  • Play a leadership role on the Analytics team, inclusive of strategy/vision setting, decisions about internal products to build for the organization, and more 
  • Act as a core partner to stakeholders in privacy/security, data engineering, DevOps, and other areas where you will provide a strong analytics perspective on major data-related decisions 
  • Enable effective use of our modern data stack – e.g., by establishing best practices within our dbt models and pushing data into end-users' systems or into the hands of analysts and data scientists 
  • Design and implement new infrastructure solutions to support our numerous legal cases that require engineering agility, including webscraping of jail websites, OCR of PDF documents received via FOIA and Discovery, and building custom databases for individual legal cases

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Management/leadership experience on a technical team with multiple direct reports, vendor management, strategic planning and other leadership responsibilities 
  • Ability to clearly translate business requirements into technical specs, and significant stakeholder management experience 
  • Significant background in applying data and analytics engineering tools and methods in a non-profit, campaign or relevant for-profit environment (e.g. marketing) 
  • Capability in designing, building, and orchestrating reliable data pipelines for analytics 
  • Mastery of SQL
  • Proficiency with data warehouses such as AWS Redshift, Postgres, or similar columnar data warehouses 
  • Proficiency in languages/tools for data ELT processes (Python, dbt) and performance optimization in and around these systems 
  • Proficiency in version control 
  • Knowledge around database architecture principles (i.e., data models, layers, etc.) 
  • Knowledge of web scraping tools/techniques, OCR technologies and other data acquisition approaches 
  • History of enabling a range of analytics users – with things like basic AWS configuration support or helping configure and maintain a BI tool(s) 
  • Understanding of how and when to use different tools for pushing analytic models or output into production (e.g., cron jobs, Airflow based DAG, REST APIs via Flask or Plumber) 

COMPENSATION

The annual salary for this position is $196,797 (Level C2). This salary is reflective of a position based in New York, NY. This salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting. Note that most of the salaries listed on our job postings reflect New York, NY salaries, where our National offices are headquartered.
