The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas is one of the leading civil rights organizations in the Lone Star State. We work in courts, legislatures, and communities to protect and extend the civil rights for Texans throughout the state. The ACLU of Texas is both a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization. The ACLU of Texas operates professional offices in Houston, Austin, Dallas, El Paso, and Brownsville, Texas.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Communications Department educates and activates Texans to work with the ACLU of Texas for strategic change in the areas of criminal legal reform, democracy and voting rights, immigration, LGBTQIA+ equality, and reproductive freedom across the state.

ROLE OVERVIEW

The ACLU of Texas seeks a Lead Communications Strategist to develop and manage communications strategy for advocacy campaigns that advance the rights of all Texans. This is an exciting opportunity to employ an innovative vision for building power and achieving wins across the issue areas of the ACLU of Texas. We're looking for someone with a broad knowledge of digital communications and media relations who thrives in the intensity of advocacy work and knows how to work across teams and in coalition to move issues forward. Ideal candidates will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, manage people and projects well, be willing to take creative risks, pay close attention to detail, and demonstrate a commitment to civil rights and racial equity.

The Lead Communications Strategist manages a Communications Strategist and reports to the Director of Communications. They work closely with motivated and mission-driven staff within the department and across the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Campaign Strategy: Leads multi-faceted communications strategy for advocacy campaigns and rapid response moments that advance integrated advocacy goals. Brings a strategic communications lens to issue-area meetings across teams and in coalition. Uses analytics to evolve strategy and content.
  • Campaign Management: Oversees the implementation of campaigns across paid, earned, shared, and owned media channels ensuring that work is completed with excellence on schedule. Manages project budgets and vendors. Deepens strategic partnerships with partner organizations. Tracks projects in Asana.
  • Process Development: Builds and refines systems, processes, and protocols for inter- and cross-departmental workflow. Designs projects in Asana.
  • Messaging: Defines how the organization communicates about key issues by developing message frames and talking points that are rooted in DEIB principles and uphold organizational tone of voice.
  • Content Production: Drafts press releases, blogs, op-eds, social posts, and other communications materials in collaboration with digital and press experts. Offers quality review of final deliverables.
  • General: Supervises and coaches a direct report. Develops relationships with colleagues across the ACLU network to collaborate on campaigns and share resources.

  • Project Management: Able to develop project concepts and break down activities into manageable pieces that can be appropriately delegated to internal collaborators and external vendors. Manages vendors for medium-sized contracts. Tracks progress using project management tools. Manages accountability processes for deliverables.
  • Teamwork: Creates a climate in which people share ownership and want to do their best. Brings a positive, problem-solving attitude to relationships with colleagues and partners. Relates well with people of different backgrounds and responsibilities. Demonstrates personal integrity, admits mistakes, and fosters trust.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least five (5) years of professional experience working in a combination of the following areas: media, strategic communications, journalism, content creation, digital communications, and public relations. At least three (3) years of professional experience working on issue-based advocacy and public awareness campaigns.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in a range of digital and press formats. Proven record of published content and full command of AP style. Ability to communicate persuasively to a wide variety of media, political, stakeholder, community, and influencer audiences.
  • Strong project management skills. Ability to delegate and coordinate deliverables across teams in a fast-paced environment with shifting demands.
  • Solid computer skills, including proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and communications tools.
  • Flexible schedule and ability to work non-traditional hours as needed. Some travel required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing the ACLU of Texas values, mission, and goals, with an understanding of structural racism and interpersonal bias.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience working on one or more of the following issues: criminal legal reform, democracy and voting rights, immigration, LGBTQIA+ equality, and reproductive freedom.
  • Prior staff management experience with a track record of using coaching, training, and feedback to develop others.
  • Fluency in Spanish.

COMPENSATION

The salary band for this position starts at $70,000 per year with room for advancement within the organization.
