ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of American Sign Language (ASL) Hearing Interpreter in the Administration & Finance Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY.

The Administration and Finance Department is led by ACLU’s Chief Operating Officer & General Counsel and provides operational, financial, technical, and human capital support and services for a 550+ person national non-profit organization. The department is integral in creating and sustaining cohesive systems across departments to ensure all staff have access to the resources they need to support ACLU's mission of advancing civil liberties and civil rights.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Operating Officer, the Hearing Interpreter will serve as a designated interpreter for the Director of Disability Accessibility & Inclusion.  The successful candidate will work alongside the Director in staff meetings, office events, conferences, the occasional out of office social gatherings and more.

Successful candidates will be highly skilled and adept in responding to changing circumstances and needs of a dynamic culture, and will pave the way for a connected and trusted accommodation experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Interpret verbal messages from spoken English into American Sign Language and from American Sign Language to spoken English; strong ASL English interpretation skills required
  • Experience handling logistics, including troubleshooting issues to remove barriers before, during, or after an interpreting event
  • Prepare for and provide interpreting services during phone and video-conference meetings with staff, organizers and clients
  • Organize and delegate the scheduling for backup and other interpreters/interpreter services; maintaining fruitful relationships with interpreters and interpreting vendors
  • Working with procurement to contract with interpreting vendors
  • Document and maintain contextual information for continuity and training of other interpreters working in the environment
  • Commitment and training around ethical decision-making
  • Utilizing research and training to stay current on trends and best practices needed to perform duties 
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned
  • Center principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in all work, embedding the values in program development, policy application, and organizational practices and processes

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated high fluency providing quality interpretation skills to mediate both culturally and linguistically from spoken English to American Sign Language (ASL) and from ASL to spoken English in an equivalent manner
  • Ability to interpret in a broad range of contextual environments, including but not limited to one-on-one meetings, small and large group meetings, videoconference, trainings, and presentations
  • RID or NAD certification required
  • 3+ years professional experience as a sign language interpreter is a plus

COMPENSATION

The annual salary for this position is $85,466. This salary is reflective of a position based in New York, NY. This salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting. Note that most of the salaries listed on our job postings reflect New York, NY salaries, where our National offices are headquartered.
