ABOUT THE JOB

  • Communicate courteously and thoughtfully with clients in both English and Spanish
  • Anticipate client needs and prepare ahead of time to be responsive to client questions and concerns
  • Schedule appointments, hearings, and deadlines accurately, keeping attorney well-informed of upcoming commitments and responsibilities
  • Document all case activity with clear, concise case notes
  • Manage legal intake under the instruction of the immigration staff attorney
  • Draft, proofread, and file, by email, fax, and/or mail, correspondence and legal documents in English and Spanish
  • Copy, scan, and file incoming case notices and correspondence
  • Coordinate paperwork for attorney review and case preparation, including affidavits and documentary evidence
  • Translate documents between English and Spanish as needed
  • Research points of contact, procedures for evidence collection, filing requirements, and additional information as needed
  • Contact local government agencies and other third parties and track follow-up tasks
  • Work with immigration staff attorney to coordinate and schedule know-your-rights presentations and other community outreach
  • Process mail, email, and voicemails efficiently
  • Manage legal documents and client information in strict confidence
  • Prioritize conflicting needs, handle matters proactively and expeditiously, effectively manage deadlines, and follow through on projects
  • Make arrangements for attorney travel
  • Additional duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Written and verbal fluency in English and Spanish
  • Superior attention to detail and ability to execute tasks precisely and accurately
  • Organized and able to work on multiple projects at the same time while meeting deadlines effectively
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to professionally represent the organization to clients, donors, and colleagues
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office 
  • Ability to work independently and maintain strict confidentiality
  • Commitment to the mission of the ACLU
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability and socio-economic circumstance
  • Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts
