The ACLU Foundation of Southern California (ACLU SoCal) seeks a Senior Staff Attorney to build and lead new litigation and policy advocacy to protect and expand voting rights in Southern California and throughout the state. The Senior Staff Attorney will also provide technical assistance to community groups and develop advocacy to expand voting rights and promote voting and civic participation specific to the region. 

Founded in 1923, the ACLU SoCal has been at the forefront of many major efforts to protect civil liberties, civil rights, and equal justice in California. Principled and nonpartisan, ACLU SoCal has offices in Los Angeles, Orange County (Santa Ana), the Inland Empire (San Bernardino), and Kern County (Bakersfield). ACLU SoCal tackles a vast array of issues, including criminal justice, police practices, First Amendment rights, gender equity and reproductive justice, LGBTQ rights, immigrants' rights, education equity, and economic justice.

OVERVIEW

The Senior Staff Attorney will develop and litigate state and federal cases; create and implement policy advocacy campaigns and campaigns to increase voting and civic participation; engage in public education; and provide technical assistance on voting rights, voter registration, and civic participation. Litigation, advocacy, and public education campaigns might include: stopping and preventing discriminatory voting practices, ensuring fair and nonbiased districting practices, making sure counties’ moves from local polling places to vote centers does not create barriers to voting, expanding the right to vote and civic participation for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, ensuring transparency and civic participation by government bodies, and educating people about their right to vote and civic participation.

The Senior Staff Attorney will work with initiative and independence but will also be part of the ACLU SoCal’s First Amendment, Government Transparency and Voting Project and ACLU of California’s cross-affiliate statewide voting rights team. The Senior Staff Attorney will also work with other attorneys, policy advocates, organizers from other ACLU of SoCal Projects and communications staff as needed and when intersectional issues arise. 

The Staff Attorney will be supervised by the Director of the First Amendment, Government Transparency and Voting Rights Project within the ACLU SoCal Advocacy Department.

CLASSIFICATION

Full-time, Exempt, Term-Limited (2 Years). This position is funded for 2 years, with a possibility for future extension contingent upon additional funding.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The ACLU SoCal’s “integrated advocacy” model unites legal advocacy, policy advocacy, organizing, and base building for maximum impact. In keeping with that approach, the Senior Staff Attorney will work on cases, advocacy projects, public education, and campaigns. The attorney’s responsibilities will be to:

  • Investigate, develop and litigate high-impact cases at the trial and appellate level in federal and state courts. Manage litigation teams, serve as co-counsel, and work in conjunction with other legal, policy, and organizing staff within the ACLU SoCal, the other two California ACLU affiliates, and partner organizations.
  • Serve as a policy expert and advocate on voting rights and civic participation issues in support of legislation and other campaigns, with responsibilities including public speaking, media interviews, outreach and "know your rights" presentations, as well as writing op-eds, newsletter articles, and reports.
  • Conduct outreach, advocacy, and provide technical assistance to public officials and government bodies.
  • Provide technical support and strategic leadership to community groups, advocates and organizers in the region.
  • Organize and lead community and stakeholder education events.
  • Run trainings for activists and organizers.
  • Help build and maintain coalitions.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ACLU SoCal anticipates hiring an attorney with 10 or more years of experience for this position, and will consider all applicants with approximately that level of experience with a demonstrated commitment to civil and human rights, racial justice, and strong advocacy and litigation skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in diverse coalitions and develop advocacy campaigns.
  • Demonstrated ability lead projects, build strong relationships, and work well in collaboration with others.
  • A deep and demonstrated commitment to the cause of civil liberties and civil rights.
  • Willingness to work occasional weekend and evening hours, as needed.
  • Willingness to travel regularly within Southern California as well as occasionally to other parts of the state.

Desired

  • Familiarity working in the area of voting rights, including California Voting Rights Act and federal Voting Rights Act litigation.
  • Familiarity working with data, demography, and mapping tools.
  • Familiarity with or experience working in Southern California.
  • Experience working with vulnerable communities.
  • Spanish language fluency.

BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $95,000 - $125,000. Benefits include medical, vision, and dental insurance for staff members and their eligible dependents; life and long-term disability insurance; 401(k) plan with employer match; ample vacation and sick leave and thirteen paid holidays.
