ABOUT THE JOB:
We need a creative thinker with a passion for our mission. We want someone who is conversant in and will speak compellingly about the ACLU’s work across the many issue areas of civil liberties and civil rights. The Communications Director is based in Houston and plays a vital role in shaping a bold vision to protect the liberties that define our democracy. We’re looking for an action-oriented leader who will collaboratively develop new content for advocacy and public-education initiatives online and through print collateral, providing project management support for the entire organization and help drive the organization’s total communications, marketing, and advocacy initiatives.

Our next Communications Director will exhibit outstanding interpersonal skills and be able to problem-solve, multi-task, respond swiftly to a sometimes wildly changing landscape, and work independently as well as work with others as a part of a team in a collaborative environment. S/he/they will have a commitment to racial equity, diversity and belonging with an approach that values the individual and respects differences and builds networks that move items to action.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Help define the next 50 years of ACLU of Texas constituent and member engagement as a part of the leadership team;
  • Lead, manage and foster talent in the communications department;
  • Manage relationships with communications consultants and program staff;
  • Manage and monitor the annual department budget, and maintain ongoing evaluation and reporting of key benchmarks;
  • Lead the strategic development of communications priorities and opportunities to best amplify our work and affect the public narrative;
  • Oversee the ACLU’s newspaper, television, and radio presence in Texas' markets by ensuring relationships with key reporters, editorial boards, and producers are cultivated by communications staff as well as other key staff;
  • Bring sophisticated framing and messaging skills and tools to our core areas;
  • Identify new strategies for injecting ACLU issues into the public debate to help sustain and grow a civil rights and civil liberties narrative;
  • Elevate the ACLU’s influence online, and bring an inspiring and professional perspective to digital and social media across all platforms;
  • Foster work that builds loyal organizational followings on social media platforms;
  • Responsible for oversight and delivery of promotional materials, such as the annual report and other collateral publications;
  • Work within the Communications department and with the Legal, Policy & Field Engagement departments and Executive Director to manage organizational partnerships and coalitions to advance shared issue goals and strategies;
  • Support overall organizational development and implementation of the Strategic Plan;
  • Develop the framework for standardization of data collection, analysis and database management;
  • Prepare written reports, meetings summaries, and related materials as required.

ABOUT YOU:

  • You have seven years’ experience in new media, traditional media, digital communications, graphic design, branding, and message development;
  • You have management experience with a demonstrated track record of effectively running a team or organization; this includes managing graphic-design and content writers including ability to synthesize complex information from a variety of sources, including attorneys, ACLU of Texas personnel and volunteers, policymakers, lobbyists and public-relations professionals, and other colleagues;
  • You have advanced interpersonal, oral and written communication, and presentation skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, compellingly, comfortably, and respectfully with donors, staff, and lay leaders in conversation or print;
  • You can prioritize concurrent tasks; manage a high-volume workload; pay attention to detail, work with a sense of urgency, adapting quickly to changing priorities; and meet moving deadlines;
  • You have experience with recruiting, developing, and managing a highly talented and diverse staff, as well as overseeing budget and administration;
  • You have substantive knowledge of the operation of the political, public policy and advocacy arenas in Texas;
