ABOUT THE JOB

  • Develop and play a leading role in executing state campaigns across the country, involving policy, legislative, communications, corporate, and electoral strategies
  • Closely work with ACLU affiliates in building campaign goals, strategies, tactics, coalitions, and budgets to reach Justice Division outcomes in the local and state legislative, administrative, and electoral arenas
  • Work with colleagues in the Organizing Division to oversee organizing and coalition work in the states, including but not limited to ACLU members and supporters, formerly incarcerated people, and communities most impacted by the criminal legal system, to build a movement to end mass incarceration
  • Lead on-the-ground meetings, planning, and campaign events in priority states, where needed
  • Engage in policy work related to ending mass incarceration and criminal legal reform
  • Oversee state campaign leadership in building campaign and electoral capacity and developing and executing campaign goals and strategies that center the leadership and voices of impacted people
  • Work with others in the ACLU, such as colleagues in the Affiliate Support and Nationwide Initiatives Department, to make affiliate campaign grants and provide feedback to affiliates on grant commitments
  • Represent the ACLU in national coalitions and develop relationships with allies and other organizations to further state-based campaign goals
  • Demonstrate a commitment to equity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and helps build a workplace of respect regardless of race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability, socio-economic circumstance, or record of arrest or conviction
  • Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High level experience with campaign design, budgeting, evaluation, supervision, and metrics-driven planning and assessment
  • Familiarity building, leading, and working within coalitions
  • Passion for and demonstrated commitment to ending mass incarceration and achieving racial justice
  • Familiarity with the criminal legal system and with public policy and legislative processes
  • Excellent research, writing, analytical, and public speaking skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team
  • Ability to simultaneously handle multiple tasks, work efficiently and quickly, and meet deadlines, while remaining composed under pressure
  • Willingness to travel
  • Commitment to the mission of the ACLU

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five years of issue advocacy and/or electoral campaign experience at the federal, state, or local levels, including campaign management experience
  • Personal experience being incarcerated or in other ways entangled with the criminal justice system
  • Experience working with formerly incarcerated people and other impacted communities
