The American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado (ACLU-CO) seeks a dynamic field organizer to support our statewide advocacy campaigns. This full-time, salaried position will be based in Denver.

Working within the ACLU of Colorado’s Campaigns Department and reporting to the Field Director, the Field Organizer will lead grassroots and grass-tops organizing activities that further the overall mission of the ACLU of Colorado, with a specific focus on our primary campaigns: Smart Justice, Immigrant Rights, Voting Rights, and Reproductive Freedom. The Field Organizer will work closely with our Campaign Coordinators, Communications, Public Policy, and Legal departments, coalition partners, and the ACLU National Office.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Canvassing, phone and text banking, tabling at events.
  • Conduct and coordinate outreach to ensure strong turn-out at town halls and public education events including making confirm calls and texts.
  • Mobilize Coloradans across the state to engage in our issues and campaigns.
  • Conduct and facilitate follow-up with attendees to assist and encourage them to take action.
  • Recruit, train, and manage an active volunteer base to participate in local events, advocate for civil rights and civil liberties, and support public education activities.
  • Build relationships with key coalition partners and lead ACLU volunteer activists.
  • Work with communications and field staff to recruit and train grassroots leaders and spokespeople.
  • Represent the ACLU of Colorado before community groups, including speaking at various community events.
  • Develop persuasive and informative public education and outreach materials, including fact sheets, talking points, and letters-to-the-editor.
  • Work with online advocacy tools and new media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) to promote events and communicate campaign messages.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Campaigns and the Field Director to develop creative tactics using video, graphics, social media and web assets that inspire our members and the public to join in ACLU campaigns.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. A positive, confident, professional and outgoing presentation. A willingness and ability to speak in public and to facilitate meetings and trainings. Bilingual, Spanish-English, a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability. A self-starter and finisher with a demonstrated ability to manage details and follow-through with a minimum of direct supervision.
  • Personally committed to advancing the ACLU’s values, mission, goals and programs, with an understanding of the range of civil rights and civil liberties issues and their implications, particularly voting rights.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the tactics and skills required to implement successful field campaigns.
  • An energetic person who can handle and prioritize multiple activities and responsibilities with strong time management skills and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to build grassroots and grass-tops support, to identify opportunities for coordination with allies and coalition partners, and motivate volunteers and spokespeople for the campaign. Demonstrated ability to create and sustain coalitions of diverse individuals or groups preferred.
  • A flexible team player that works collaboratively and shares responsibility and credit.
  • Emotionally mature and self-confident, with a sense of humor and the ability to maintain balance and perspective.
  • A commitment to diversity; a personal approach that values the individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance.
  • Willingness to work overtime or irregular hours, including weekends and evenings.
  • A willingness and ability to travel within the state.
  • Proficiency with computers: Windows, Microsoft Office, graphic designs skills and internet research in particular.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Salary is in the mid-40s.  Excellent benefits package is provided, including paid vacation and personal days, medical and dental insurance, 401(k) with matching contribution, life and long-term disability insurance.
