Abl believes every student deserves the opportunity to make informed and meaningful choices about their life and future. Unfortunately, many students aren’t given the same opportunities due to systemic inequities. Abl offers advanced, data-driven software and services to help K12 schools and districts identify and remove those inequities. Abl’s Data Science team is at the forefront of this challenge, driving scalable data-driven student impact and partnering with other teams to experiment with differentiated product development that has a positive impact on student outcomes. Abl is currently doing this work with some of the largest districts in the country, such as Los Angeles Unified, New York Dept of Ed, Portland Public Schools, Denver Public Schools, and the state of Washington. The Abl team is made up of veteran school leaders, district-level decision-makers, and teachers working together with veteran software engineers, designers, and data scientists.

We are looking for a Senior Data Platform Engineer who is excited to build critical infrastructure to make data useful, building out a platform that will empower data scientists to directly impact and iterate on our customer-facing products. As Abl’s first data platform engineer, you will collaborate with data scientists and engineers to design, scope, and build a suite of tools to scalably leverage high impact data in customer facing applications and internal analysis.

You’re excited about this role because you will...

  • Collaboratively drive the technical vision for the Abl data science platform, a suite of tools that enables us to leverage our exceptional data to deliver insights and predictions to customers and internal users. In collaboration with Data Science and Engineering you will identify opportunities for our technical roadmap to accelerate our short and long term impact, value, and business goals.
  • Design, build, and scale data warehouse infrastructure, tools for workflow execution, and user-facing recommendations.
  • Support data scientists in building scalable, efficient, data pipelines.
  • Report to the Head of Data Science and collaborate with Engineering to design and build scalable processes and systems that promote clear team responsibilities and reduce hand-offs.
  • Help define data platform engineering at Abl.

We’re excited about you because...

  • You drive toward a vision: You excel at collaboratively defining a vision, and delivering iterative solutions that grow data capabilities over time.
  • You have experience supporting transforming application/OLTP data to analytics/OLAP data: you have worked on infrastructure that includes things like databases, workflow management, containerization, and ETL/ELT pipelines, at multiple orders of magnitude of data scale.
  • You have dug into the data: You have directly contributed to data transformation pipelines and have thoughts about analytical data modeling tradeoffs.
  • You thrive in a collaborative environment: You do your best work assessing user needs, considering existing infrastructure, and iteratively developing solutions to level-up data capabilities.
  • You value strong communication: You effectively communicate your opinions to peers with expertise, humility, and kindness.
  • You have a growth mindset: You welcome feedback and new ideas and cultivate a collaborative environment.

Company Culture

Abl employees share a passion for revolutionizing education through school design, whether or not they have prior experience working in the field. We value diversity of background and thought. We strive to create a safe and supportive environment where trust, communication, creativity, and humility are valued as highly as technical skills. We believe shared ownership builds a more resilient company, and we tackle hard problems, together. We are a fully remote team, and expect to resume regular team- and company-wide gatherings in the future. If that sounds like your dream work environment, we look forward to hearing from you.

A Note to Candidates

Studies have shown that women, people of color, and folks from other groups underrepresented in technology are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they check all the boxes in a job description. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job, and that candidate may be one who comes from a less traditional background. If you think you’re a good fit, we encourage you to apply, even if you don't meet every one of our qualifications.
