Technical Marketing Writer - Data Storyteller




Do you have a talent for finding news stories inside complex data sets? Are you comfortable diving into first-hand, proprietary data and transforming it into interesting stories, articles, and videos for our business clients and media partners? Do you have impeccable news judgment, and are always asking "what's the best way to tell this story"? Are you passionate about providing data visualization content that will be shared across multiple communication channels?


We are looking for a Technical Marketing Writer - Data Storyteller to create compelling thought leadership content (including, but not limited to white papers, blogs, bylined articles) that engages our audiences and influences the decision-making processes of current and prospective consumer packaged goods clients. A successful candidate will be able to dive deep and make sense of our robust data set and knowledge library, which includes shopper insights for nearly half of U.S. households via the Kroger loyalty card. You will uncover industry and category trends and weave information together to create a compelling narrative, tapping into creativity to engage and inform our audiences using information graphics, data visualizations, animations, motion graphics and multimedia storytelling across the web and social media. You will be a central part of our marketing efforts as we heighten awareness for 84.51° and its thought leadership.


This role is part of the Corporate Marketing team and is pivotal in increasing awareness, credibility and brand equity for 84.51°, as well as increasing media coverage. You will be the first Data Journalist hire and will have the ability to create and shape our strategy, voice, and approach across numerous content areas.


  • Initiate and create data-driven thought leadership and marketing content, with a publisher’s mindset that result in increased awareness, credibility and engagement for 84.51°.
  • Specifically, brainstorms, plans, develops, and writes engaging white papers, articles, social posts, videos and blogs based on the latest data, and framed within the context of current events, trends and topics that are of interest to our audiences and the greater community we serve.
  • Performs analysis of 84.51°’s data and research insights.
  • Develops, adapts and keeps thought leadership calendar while repurposing and scaling content.
  • Provides guidance and works with Marketing Manager, data scientists, creative resources and external agency partners to create visuals to accompany the stories like graphs, maps or infographics.
  • Obtains a deep understanding of 84.51° solutions and capabilities and the value they create for clients.
  • Build relatationships and network across the business to learn, analyze, understand data and inisights and be able to then develop impactful content.
  • Partners with cross-functional teams, Business Leaders, Product Marketing Owners, data scinetists, other senior leaders and PR agency to develop thought leadership content strategy and manage content pipeline.
  • Works alongside project manager to align expectations, tasks and deadlines.


  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Business, Communications, English, Journalism, or related field, Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience as technical writer, copywriter, editor or journalist-type role in a data-centric environment focused on telling unique and compelling stories.
  • Ability to analyze and understand data, a proven ability to edit and write clearly, and comfort working both individually and collaboratively in a cross-functional team.
  • Experience working with various content formats
  • Excellent grammatical skills and the ability to develop content that requires little to no editing.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple projects, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Passionate about driving business growth through clear, insightful storytelling, and are comfortable working in a fast-paced, data-driven environment
  • Excellent communicator and creative thinker
  • Knowledge in SEO and content marketing tools, familiarity with SEO best practices
  • Outstanding data visualization skills
